South Carolina Leads Queens, Vanderbilt, Wingate

The South Carolina swimming team leads Queens, Wingate and Vanderbilt after the first session of a two-day meet. The Gamecock men lead Queens 129-51 and Wingate 150-30. In the women’s competition South Carolina leads Queens 132-48, Wingate 104-44 and Vanderbilt 115-65. 

The Gamecocks won two of four relays as the women claimed the 200 freestyle relay to open the meet and men closed out the day with a win in the 400 medley relay. 

Freshman Nils Wich-Glasen tallied two wins, taking first place in the 100 breaststroke (55.59) and 200 IM (1:52.10).

Freshman Akram Mahmoud (4:25.79) and junior Marwan El Kamash (4:28.14) finished first and second in the men’s 500 freestyle while freshman Taylor Worrell (4:56.06) and senior Victoria Mitchell (4:58.66) took second and third on the women’s side. 

Ashleigh Ferguson added a second-place finish for the women with her season-best time of 2:01.13 in the 200 backstroke. The men swept the 200 backstroke as freshman Bryce Kananowicz (1:50.86), senior Michael Covert (1:51.24) and sophomore Jonathan Boland (1:52.02) placed first through third, respectively.  

Freshman Meredith Vay (51.10) and seniors Rachel Elliott (51.11) and Sarah Drake (51.57) scored points in the 100 freestyle as the trio placed second, third and fourth, respectively. Redshirt sophomore Kevin Leithold won the men’s race with his time of 45.35. 

In the head-to-head competition between South and Clemson in women’s diving the Gamecocks defeated the Tigers.  On the one-meter springboard Julia Vincent placed first with a score of 316.27 and senior Patricia Kranz followed with 304.80 points for second place. The duo also claimed the top two spots on the three-meter with Kranz winning the board (354.22) and Vincent taking second (340.20). Freshman Marissa Roth finished third on the one-meter with a career high score of 288.80 and sixth on the three meter with 282.15 points.

Queens University of Charlotte men’s and women’s swim team fell shy in team standings after the first day at the University of South Carolina Swim Meet as they competed against their Division I opponents the University of South Carolina, Vanderbilt University (women’s only), and conference rival Wingate University on Friday, January 23, 2015. The Royals overcame Wingate on both the men’s and women’s side with the men taking a 98-50 score while the women nudged the Bulldogs out with a 78-70 score.

The men would trail the Gamecocks after the first day as South Carolina gained 129 points to the Royals 51. The women’s team follow the Gamecocks 132-48 and Vanderbilt 93-55. South Carolina would finish the day taking all of the dual matchups on both sides.

Starting the day in one of their best events, Queens saw both relays soar past the competition for the 200 Yard Freestyle. The women’s relay comprised of Patri Castro Ortega, Caroline Arakelian, Kristin Diemer, and Alexandra Marshall, respectfully, harnessed a 1:35.94 for second place. The men’s relay of Matthew Josa, Niclas Eriksson, Austin Sumrall, and Hayden Kosater, respectfully, surpassed the competition for a 1:22.63 first place touch to start the day.  

Castro-Ortega found the wall first in the 500 Yard Freestyle taking a 4:50.14 for the race. Her time launched her to the top of the NCAA for Division II and grabbed an NCAA ‘A’ Standard finish.

Nicholas Arakelian and Alex Menke reached inside of the top five for the 500 Yard Freestyle, taking the top two places for Division II swimmers in the race. Arakelian touched third with a 4:29.95 as Menke grabbed fifth place with a 4:39.64.

Eriksson climbed into second place for the 100 Yard Backstroke clocking a 56.01. Josa would follow with a fourth place finish and a 56.60 time. Queens would have one more reach into the top five as William Hicks took a 57.19 for the event.   

With a first overall finish, C. Arakelian powered to the wall in the 200 Yard Backstroke coming in with a 2:01.05 and overcoming Ashleigh Ferguson of South Carolina in the last 50 meters of the race.

Castro-Ortega topped the 100 Yard Freestyle with a 50.28 finish. Her time would move her into third for NCAA DII swimmers and secure a NCAA ‘B’ Standard cut.
N. Arakelian again put together a strong performance this time for the 100 Yard Freestyle. He took a 45.97 for a second place finish giving him a NCAA ‘B’ Standard time.

It was first overall for Josa in the 200 Yard Butterfly as he touched with a 1:48.27. Josa held control of the race from start to finish to improve off his 1:49.43 time and move him into third place nationally.

The day would end with the men’s 400 Yard Relay team comprised of John Suther, Eriksson, Josa, and Kosater, respectfully, taking second place with a 3:19.09 as they narrowly missed first by four one-hundredths of a second.  

The Royals will compete again tomorrow as they look to battle their way up the team standings.

 

The Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams are participating in a meet at the University of South Carolina Friday and Saturday. In addition to the host Gamecocks, Bluegrass Mountain Conference members Wingate and Queens (N.C.) are involved in the two-day event. Vanderbilt's women are also competing.

For the Wingate women, sophomore Sofia Petrenko (Arkhangelsk, Russia) collected a gold, silver and bronze medal Friday. She won the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:04.72. Petrenko was second in the 200 Butterfly (2:04.15), while partnering with three teammates to finish third in the 400 Medley Relay (3:50.81).

Joining Petrenko on the 400 Medley Relay quartet were sophomores Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia) and Jessika Weiss (Macon, Ga.) and junior Armony Dumur (Amiens, France). Arkhipova was third in the 200 Backstroke (2:03.60), while Weiss was the top NCAA Division II finisher in the 100 Breaststroke (sixth place, 1:05.89).

On the men's side, sophomore Roman Kanyuka (Moscow, Russia) and senior Issam Zeraidi (Brussels, Belgium) both posted third-place finishes. Kanyuka was third in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 56.57, while Zeraidi was third in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 46.25.

Seniors David Collum (DeLand, Fla.) and Samuel Knapp (Madison, Ala.) recorded the top Division II time in their individual events Friday. Collum posted a time of 1:55.20 in the 200 Individual Medley, while Knapp a 1:54.63 time on the board in the 200 Backstroke.
