Delaware Sweeps Iona, St. Peter's

After falling to Towson Saturday, the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving team were able to bounce back and sweep a non-conference tri-meet against Iona and St. Peter’s Sunday.

The Blue Hen men (4-6, 0-4 CAA) defeated St. Peter’s 187-98 and downed Iona by a margin of 221-72. The Delaware women’s squad (10-3, 4-3 CAA) was able to top the Peacocks 200-80 and beat the Gaels by a score of 226-68.

“Today was a solid meet by our teams,” said University of Delaware head coach John Hayman.  “We had the opportunity to see the swimmers compete in some events that they normally do not swim and I thought on the whole, they performed very well.”

The UD men were dominant as they accounted for 12 victories on the day. Patrick Savidge (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) and Gregory Neidlinger (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) led the way with two victories. Savidge picked up his wins in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle while Neidlinger was able to touch first in the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle competitions.

The relay team of Nicholas Badsky (Topeka, Kan./Washburn Rural) , Cory Camp (Olney, Md./James Hubert Blake), Everett Albert (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic), and Alexander Hillsley (Port Matilda, Pa./State College Area) also stood out as they recorded victories in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

The Delaware divers put forth exceptional performances Sunday as Patrick McCann (Annandale, Va./Annandale) swept the diving events with wins in the 1 – meter and 3 – meter competitions. Colin Hall (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro South) notched second place finishes in both diving events.

The UD women tallied 11 victories Sunday with Kristina Congdon (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Annie Nunes (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) earning two victories each. Congdon won the 1 – meter and 3 – meter diving competitions while Nunes earned her wins in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly events.

Madeline Maher (Richboro, Pa./Germantown Academy) touched first in the 200 breaststroke event with a time of 2:27.01 while Hailey Farrell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) notched a win in the 100 freestyle with a time of 10:25.25.

Both Blue Hen teams will return to action Saturday as they travel to Philadelphia to take on Penn in the final regular season meet before the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships at the end of February.
