UNLV Splits With UC Santa Barbara

The UNLV men's and women's swimming teams split a dual meet with UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon in Buchanan Natatorium. UNLV's women's squad won its second straight with a 134-128 decision while the men fell to the Gauchos 151.5-110.5.
 
The Rebels trailed in the women's meet by a 104-103 score with three events left. Then came the 100 fly where UNLV went 1-2-4 thanks to Jessica Wong (56.80), Janelle Nguyen (57.17) and Lina Rathsack (58.44). That put the Rebels ahead 118-108. UCSB closed to within 123-122 entering the final event, the 400 free relay. UNLV cruised in that race, as Julia Fehervari, Rathsack, Elena Garvilova and Michelle Troup posted a winning time of 3:25.81, over three seconds faster then the Gauchos' top relay squad. That allowed UNLV to outscore the visitors 11-5 in the event to claim the six-point win.

Fehervari and Wong both won two events for UNLV in the victory. Fehervari placed first in the 50 (23.65) and 200 (1:52.66) free, while Wong took the 200 back in 2:03.18. Other individual event winners included Gavrilova in the 100 back (57.36), Troup in the 100 free (51.91). The Rebels opened the game winning the 200 medley relay, posting a time of 1:44.54 thanks to the team of Gavrilova, Natalie Sanchez, Wong and Troup.

UNLV won six men's races, including both relays. The first win came in the 200 medley relay, with Henrique Machado, Boris Kulizhnikov, Dillon Virva and Or Sabatier posting a time of 1:30.84. Matt Roe then won the 1000 free in 9:37.83. Machado added another victory in the 100 back, touching the wall in 50.22. Next was Virva in the 50 free, in 20.59, while Samuel Lameynardie won the 100 free in 45.94. The final victory was in the 400 free relay. Lameynardie, Balint Batka, Sabatier and Virva claimed the final race with a winning time of 3:02.10.

The Rebels will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 24, when it hosts Air Force at 12 pm in Buchanan Natatorium.
