The Wisconsin swimming and diving program finished its tri-dual meet with Indiana and Notre Dame at the UW Natatorium on Saturday, as both the men and women split the event with wins over Notre Dame and loses to Indiana.

The Badgers gave fans plenty to be excited about as the championship season approaches, as a number of individuals posted impressive finishes and times, while the women’s team also came within one point of Indiana.

“I thought both the men and the women did a great job of competing and racing," UW head coach Whitney Hite said. "Indiana is a really great team and they're tough, but I thought we did a great job being tough ourselves. The women are starting to believe that they can be as good as they are, and only losing by one point is pretty big for us. Indiana's men are very good and we fell a little short, but we know that we can be better."

Once again, the women’s relay teams started the day off on a high note, as Ivy Martin, Solveig Viren, Anna Meinholz and Aja Van Hout combined to capture first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of one minute, 33.69 seconds. On the men’s side, Cannon Clifton, Brett Pinfold, Damon Zito and Ryan Stack teamed up to finish second in 1:23.19.

The Badgers put on a show and flaunted their depth in the 400-yard individual medley, as both the men and women swept the top-three spots. Van Hout took home Wisconsin’s first individual victory of the day, claiming a first-place touch in 4:18.88. Danielle Valley took second in 4:21.50, while Jenny Holtzen finished third in 4:22.56. For the men, Josh Anderson captured the event win with a time of 3:59.21, while Matt Hutchins touched second in 4:03.90 and Max Dolan rounded out the top three with a time of 4:03.90.

Martin, the reigning Big Ten champion in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, captured yet another pool record on Saturday — her second of the weekend — this time in the 100 free with a time of 49.60. Not far behind was Chase Kinney, who took second in 50.09.

For the men, sophomore Clifton touched second in 100 free with a time of 45.15, while fellow sophomore and Texas native Pinfold placed third with a time of 45.41.

The duo of Drew teDuits and Austin Byrd finished one-two in the 200-yard backstroke. teDuits captured first place with a time of 1:48.74, while Byrd touched in 1:49.05.  For the women, Madeline Hazle came in third place with a time of 1:59.20, while Madison Blaydes placed fifth in 2:05.33.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, senior captain Nick Schafer took home another individual victory, claiming first in 1:59.71, while Jake Mandli took fourth in 2:03.22. On the women’s side, Meinholz and Maria Carlson claimed second and third behind American record-holder Emma Reaney of Notre Dame. Meinholz touched second in 2:19.40, followed by Carlson’s time of 2:20.02.

Christchurch, New Zealand native and reigning Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, Hutchins, cruised to first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:25.25, while senior captain Nick Caldwell touched second in 4:29.31. For the women competing in the 500 free, Valley took third in 4:53.02 and Holtzen placed fourth with a time of 4:55.62.

Martin took home her second individual victory of the day in the 100-yard butterfly, touching in 53.50, while sophomore Dana Grindall placed third with a time of 55.35. For the men, Harrison Tran placed third in 49.91 and Clifton’s time of 50.18 placed fifth.

Going into the last relay of the meet, the UW women rose to the occasion in an impressive fashion. Wisconsin’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ 400-yard individual medley relay teams finished first and second, respectively, in a notable display of depth that brought the women within just one point of No. 14 Indiana. Annie Tamblyn, Meinholz, Grindall and Kinney combined to touch first in 3:42.94, while Hazle, Carlson, Martin and Van Hout came right behind in second place with their time of 3:43.01.

For the men, the team of teDuits, Schafer, Clifton and Pinfold finished second in the 400 IM relay with a time of 3:17.12.

In diving, Ashley Peterson finished fifth in 3-meter with a score of 298.40 and came in sixth place in 1-meter at 264.10. For the men, Dan Cech set personal records to finish sixth in 3-meter (343.45) and ninth in 1-meter (276.75).

"With just two more home meets, I think this puts us in a great position to land the plane and do what we know we can do when it counts at conference (championships) and NCAA (championships)," Hite said. "Everything points to those meets, so it's a good step for us. With Milwaukee and Green Bay coming up, we can fine tune a little bit and get ready for conference (championships)."

Wisconsin returns to the pool Feb. 6 and 7, hosting in-state opposition Milwaukee and Green Bay at the UW Natatorium for the final meets of the regular season.

University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving seniors Allison Casareto and Emma Reaney each won an event Saturday on the final day of a two-day double dual meet with No. 24 Wisconsin and No. 14 Indiana.

Casareto, who finished second on the 3-meter board Friday night, claimed the victory on the 1-meter with 327.50 points, which was a new career-best mark in the event. The La Habra Heights, California product has won the 1-meter five times in eight opportunities this season.

Reaney, who won the 100 breast and 200 IM in NCAA B Cut times Friday night, dominated the 200 breast by almost six seconds to go a perfect three-for-three in individual events on the weekend. Her time of 2:13.61 in the event was an NCAA B cut time.

The Lawrence, Kansas native is 7-0 in the 200 breast, 5-0 in the 200 IM and 7-1 in the 100 breast this season.

Elsewhere on day two, the Irish turned in a solid showing in the 200 breast, as they claimed four of the top six spots in the field. In addition to Reaney’s victory, sophomore Danielle Margheret claimed fourth (2:22.47), junior Genevieve Bradford placed fifth (2:23.26) and freshman Sherri McIntee took sixth (2:23.79).

Notre Dame closed out the day by touching the wall fourth in the 400 medley relay, as the foursome of Catherine Galletti, Reaney, Courtney Whyte and Catherine Mulquin finished in 3:47.16.

The Irish (4-9) lost to the Badgers, 244-109, and the Hoosiers, 255-98, and return to action in two weeks when they host the annual two-day Shamrock Invitational. Jan. 30-31.

The University of Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team had several key members of their team out this weekend due to the flu, and the lack of depth in the lineup played a crucial part in their 257-96 loss to Wisconsin. The Irish move to 3-5 on the season.

"We had some guys show a lot of effort yesterday, and we were a little better today," Irish head coach Matt Tallman says of his team's performance. "The guys put in some clear effort, but we are looking forward to getting back home to South Bend and training. We have a few more weeks before our serious rest period takes place, and despite the results of this weekend, we have a lot to look forward to at the end of the season."

In a déjà vu moment, Irish divers Joe Coumos (390.95), Ted Wagner (330.70) and James Lichtenstein (290.20) came in third, seventh and ninth in the 3-meter competition respectively. Coumos one night prior earned third place in the 1-meter event, whereas Lichtenstein finished sixth and Wagner eighth.

In the 200 free relay, the A-team of Justin Plaschka, Zachary Stephens, Kevin Bradley and Reed Fujan finished fourth (1:24.61) while the B team lineup of Michael Hudspith, Kevin Hughes, Trent Jackson and Rob Whitacre came in seventh (127:37).

In the 400 IM, sophomore Kevin Bradley earned the top finish with his seventh place, 4:07.00 showing. Seniors John Nappi (4:09.18) and Matthew DeBlasio (4:12.62) came in eighth and ninth respectively.

In 100 free, Plaschka and Fujan finished one-tenth of a second apart (46.76 to 46.86) to claim seventh and eighth place, while Kevin Hughes clinched 10th (47.00) and Hudspith came in 12th (47.51).

James McEldrew had one of the few top-three finishes for the Irish, touching the wall third in the 200 back (1:51.61). Junior Bogac Ayhan (1:52.33) finished sixth, Whitacre claimed eighth (1:53.20) and DeBlasio rounded out the top 10 (2:00.35). Also finishing in the top three was Stephens, who came in third in the 200 breast (2:02.84). Cameron Miller finished seventh (2:06.38) and junior Andrew Jensen claimed ninth (2:09.05).

Missing Jonathan Williamson, the Irish still had strong swims in the 100 fly, with Plaschka touching the wall in 50.13 to claim fourth place and Ayhan (50.62) and Patrick Olson (51.20) finishing sixth and seventh. Broderick Kelley came in 10th (51.78).

In the last event of the day, Notre Dame's A-lineup of Ayhan, Miller, Plaschka and Stephens claimed third in the 400 medley relay (3:20.73) while their B-team (Whitacre, Jensen, Olson and Hughes) finished eighth (3:28.26).

Next up for Notre Dame to close out the regular season is a pair of home meets, the first of which will honor the 14 graduating seniors at the Shamrock Invite (Jan. 30-31st) and in the second, hosting traditional foe Cleveland State.
