West Virginia Splits With TCU

The West Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams combined for two pool records and one school record in a dual-meet split with TCU on Friday night at the WVU Natatorium.

The men came away with a 192-108 win, while the women fell by a slim margin of 155-145 to the Horned Frogs.

“I think both teams came out and really set the tone on the relays,” said coach Vic Riggs. “We had a lot of really good, up-front swims in that first session. Overall, our attitude, our racing and our energy was the best I’ve seen all season.”

Andrew Marsh raced to a first-place finish in men’s 100-yard backstroke in a WVU Natatorium pool record time of 48.27. Marsh eclipsed the previous-best mark of 48.44 set by Bryce Bohman in 2013.

Another WVU Natatorium pool record was broken in the men’s 200 IM. Nate Carr placed first in a record 1:50.42, breaking the previous record held by Tim Phillips (1:51.19) in 2008.

“The men felt they could put the meet away in the middle session, and they did,” Riggs said. “We continued to have really strong performances from Andrew, but overall we had some men who stepped up who we needed to step up.”

In the women’s 3-meter diving, Jenn Rey set a new school record with a mark of 292.27. The previous school record of 290.62 set by Haily VandePoel in 2013.

On the women’s 1-meter board, the Mountaineers swept first, second and third place with all competitors recording season-best marks. Haily VandePoel placed first with a season-best mark of 314.93. On the men’s 3-meter board, Alex Obendorf placed first with a mark of 310.72, while Logan McHenry took second with a season-best mark of 274.04. “It was a big day for our divers,” said diving coach Michael Grapner. “They all have been working extremely hard and clearly are applying the adjustments we are making in practice.”

In the men’s 50-yard freestyle, Tim Squires and Ross Glegg finished first (20.46) and second (21.18), respectively. The duo did the same in the men’s 100-yard freestyle with times of 45.68 and 46.09, respectively.

Julie Ogden placed first in the women’s 200-yard butterfly in 2:02.77. Ogden’s time was less than two seconds off the Natatorium pool record.

“For our ladies to bounce back after a rough showing at Pitt last weekend – to race this well and this confidently – is certainly a step in the right direction for them,” Riggs said.

In the men’s 200-yard freestyle, Ross Glegg, Nate Carr and Nathan Cobbe finished first, second and third respectively. Glegg took first in 1:40.00, Carr placed second in a season-best time of 1:40.05 and Cobbe finished third in 1:43.43.
