Oakland Leads Own Winter Invite

Two individual wins by Jorden Merrilees on the men's side while Takara Martin had an individual and relay victory for the women during the first day of action at Oakland's winter invitational against Cincinnati, Kenyon and Olivet Nazarene. The Golden Grizzlies are in first place for both the women and the men.

Both squads tallied six victories through the first nine events of the two-day meet. For the women, who have a 58-point lead over Kenyon heading into Saturday, the Golden Grizzlies book-ended the day with wins in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Kyra Rietveld, Martin, Holly Morren and Nikki Flynn got the day off right with a time of 1:45.48 in the medley relay, while Morren, Rietveld,Melissa VanderMeulen and Flynn touched first in the 200 free relay in 1:36.48.

Adding individual victories for Oakland on the women's side were Stella Pasalidou in the 100 butterfly (58.85), Tricia Grant on the 3-meter board (312.55), Martin in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.33) and Patricia Aschan in the 400 IM (4:28.69).

Martin paced a 1-2-4 finish in the 100 breast, with teammates Rachel Waite (1:05.26) and VanderMeulen (1:06.02) aiding in the team effort. 

For the men, Merrilees was victorious in the 500 freestyle (4:32.51) and the 400 IM (3:58.61) as all four teams are within 43 points of each other. Also winning for the Golden Grizzlies were Tuomas Kiviluoma in the 100 butterfly (50.14), Stirling Fordham on the 1-meter board (298.95) and Aleksander Danielewski in the 100 backstroke (50.14). 

The men's 200 medley relay team of Danielewski, John Schihl, Kiviluoma and Jeremiah Morren raced to a win with a time of 1:31.85.

Action resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Oakland Aquatics Center.
