Miami (OH) Splits With Buffalo

Miami men’s swimming and diving took on the University at Buffalo on Friday afternoon at the Nixon Aquatic Center for their first home meet of 2015, falling to the Bulls, 132-168.

There was a strong showing from many swimmers including senior Joe Baumgartner who brought home three individual first-place finishes.

Baumgartner took first in the 200-yard freestyle with his time of 1:41.05. He also earned first in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 20.49. In the 100-yard freestyle, Baumgartner brought home yet another first-place finish with his time of 45.91, followed by fellow RedHawks sophomore Grant Stafford in third and freshman Ross Westrick in fourth, respectively.

Junior Christopher Dieter placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with his time of 1:42.48. Westrick also competed in the 50-yard freestyle and finished in third place, respectively.

In the diving competition, junior Cole Fryman finished first in the one-meter with his total of 280.95 points.  Fryman also took first in the three-meter competition as well finishing with 305.48 points. Junior Michael Nash also earned points for the team when he placed fourth one-meter competition.

Junior Davis Staley had a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall at 51.60, followed junior Sean Neri in third.

In the final event of the competition, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Miami finished first. The team was led by Baumgartner, Prodoehl, Strauss, and Westrick. The combined team time was 1:23.62.

In the 200-yard backstroke, junior Jacob Prodoehl clocked a time of 1:52.67 earning him second place. Sophomore Bryan McNamara also turned in a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with his time of 4:41.67.

Freshman Peter Simcox finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with his time of 51.36. Senior Andy Kilkenny earned points for the team when he clocked a time of 1:55.35 in the 200-yard IM, finishing second.

The next competition takes Miami to Ypsilanti, Michigan to take on Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 31. 

 

Miami University’s women’s swimming and diving team is now 4-2 in dual meets on the year after beating Buffalo, 182.5-117.5, on Friday, Jan. 16, at the Nixon Aquatic Center.

The team has not lost a meet since they hosted Ohio State on Oct. 23.

The meet led off with the 200-yard medley relay, where the team of sophomore Brittany Dudzinski, sophomore Stephanie LeMire, junior Gabby Veri and senior Annie Marquiss earned first place with a time of 1:45.24.

LeMire went on to win the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke, clocking in with times of 1:04.27 and 2:18.76, respectively. She also won the 200-yard IM, with a time of 2:06.79.

The 100-yard backstroke ended with a top-three RedHawk finish, consisting of senior Katie Bootsma (57.99), Dudzinski (58.06) and junior Michele Rielly (58.59). Rielly also took first place in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 2:03.53. Katie Kuhl (2:04.73) and Bootsma (2:07.15) finished in second and third place, respectively.

The 200-yard freestyle was won by senior Stephanie Pearce, touching the wall in 1:53.62. Junior Sara Krueger was the third-place finisher in the race, with a time of 1:54.21.

Marquiss was another Miami swimmer who had a big day, tying for second place in the 50-yard freestyle (23.84). She also earned second place in the 100-yard freestyle (52.12).

Freshman Holly Schuster was the second-place finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of 1:06.25. Freshman Lainey Massaro earned third place by swimming the race in 1:07.06. Schuster also took third in the 100-yard butterfly (58.09).

Sophomore Kathleen Dodson swam a 58.00 in the 100-yard butterfly to a second-place finish. She also came in third place in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.78).

Freshman Shay Spelman took third place in both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:22.84) and 500-yard freestyle (5:04.41).

Junior Aubrey Kluth came in second place in the 200-yard IM, clocking in at 2:08.08. Sophomore Elise Campbell was the third-place finisher in the race, swimming a time of 2:09.19. Elise Campbell also placed third in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 52.21.

The last event of the day was the 200-yard freestyle relay, which was won by the team of Marquiss, Krueger, junior Natalie Rohr and Kuhl, with a winning time of 1:35.27.

Diving was a big part of the RedHawk’s success, with sophomores Jenna Karrow (260.25) and Taylor LeCount (228.97) coming in first and second places, respectively, in the three-meter dive. Karrow also won the one-meter dive with a score of 266.63.

The RedHawk women have eight days off before they travel to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
