UMBC Sweeps Howard

The UMBC swimming and diving teams picked up victories over Howard on Saturday. The men (6-1) won 121-92, while the women (5-1) earned a 121-95 victory. UMBC won every event on the day.

The women kicked things off with a win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Lauren Day, Emily Escobedo, Amanda Day and Kristie Langford took first in a time of 1:48.70. Faye Hixenbaugh, Allison Atkinson, Brooke St. Martin and Alissa Caulfield took first in the 200 free relay in a time of 1:41.45.

Alissa Caulfield took gold in the 1000 free, winning in a time of 10:54.03. Emily Escobedo continued her strong sophomore campaign with a win in the 200 free (1:58.12). Lauren Day (100 back), Carly Waters (100 breast), Kayla Lilly (200 fly), and Catherine Frediani (50 free) picked up individual wins before the first intermission.

Escobedo picked up her second win of the day, touching the wall first in the 100 free in a time of 54.27. Hannah Sutherland and Cassie Jordan also picked up victories in the 200 back and 200 breast respectively. Sutherland touched the wall in 2:09.21, while Jordan finished the 200 breast in 2:31.76. Lilly also was a double winner on Saturday, taking first in the 500 free in a time of 5:12.75.

Amanda Day and Catherine Frediani picked up the final two individual victories on the day. Day finished the 100 fly in 58.70, while Frediani finished the 200 IM in 2:11.48.

On the men's side, UMBC opened the meet with Nikola Trajkovic, Leo Endres, Lauri Kaei and Gregor Sporlein taking first in 1:35.16. Breen, Gutzat, Trevor Doll, andBryan Mattingly earned a win in the 200 free relay in a time of 1:27.41.

Andrew Femiano kicked off the individual races with a win the 1000 free, touching the wall in 9:52.66. Jonas Gutzat and Andrew McKissick won back to back events, with Gutzat winning the 200 free (1:39.95) and McKissick taking gold in the 100 back (55.17). John Carroll (100 breast), Nikola Trajkovic (1:56.89) and Lauri Kaei (50 free) took home first place finishes before the first break.

Following the intermission, both Rob Breen and Gregor Sporlein finished in a time of 46.99 in the 100 free. Trajkovic picked up his second win of the day in the 200 back with a time of 1:55.33. Luca Santinelli picked up a victory in the 200 back with a time of 2:08.70. Miles Ruttan picked up a win in the 500 free in a time of 4:55.61.

Rob Breen and Trajkovic picked up the final individual wins of the day. Breen finished the 100 fly in a time of 54.97, while Nikola finished the 200 IM in a time of 1:55.95.

The Retrievers will close out the regular season on Saturday, January 24 against East Carolina. The Senior Day/Alumni meet with the Pirates begins at 1:00 p.m. at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.
