George Washington in Second at Rhode Island Invite

The George Washington men's swimming and diving team sits in second place after the first day of competition at the Rhode Island Invitational at the Rams' Tootell Aquatic Center.

The Colonials amassed 129 points and trail Atlantic 10 rival Massachusetts' 186 points in the two-squad match-up after six events.

Senior Adam Rabe, sophomore Ben Fitch and freshmen Aneil Srivastava and Jarvus Pennington paced GW with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.06. The quartet was followed closely by senior Goran Koprivnjak, sophomores Bogdan Balteanu and Liam Huffman and freshman Gustav Hokfelt, who finished second with a time of 1:29.48.

Huffman and Koprivnjak each added runner-up efforts in the 500-yard free (4.42.07) and 200-yard IM (1:56.45), respectively.

The Buff and Blue squad of Hokfelt, Rabe, Fitch and Koprivnjak placed third in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:33.72.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Fitch, Rabe and Pennington earned third (22.66), fourth (22.80) and fifth (23.02) place finishes, respectively.

The Colonials return to the pool Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. for the conclusion of the two-day event.

The Colonials amassed 133 points and trail Atlantic 10 foe Massachusetts (165) by 32 points. Host Rhode Island rounds out the field of three with 120 points after six events.

A quartet of second-place finishes paced GW, with freshman Abigail Fusco, seniors Janica Lee and Morgan Zebley and sophomore Carly Whitmer starting the day with a runner-up performance in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:59.90. Fusco and Lee each contributed additional second-place efforts in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.26) and 200-yard individual medley (2:10.25), respectively. Zebley, freshmen Phoebe Turner and Hannah Kopydlowski and junior Maggie Hofstadter rounded out the day's top finishes with a runner-up performance in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.02.

In the 500-yard freestyle, junior Hannah Schaefer placed third with a time of 5:13.61, followed by classmate Madison Reinker in fourth with a time of 5:15.10.

The Colonials return to the pool Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. for the conclusion of the two-day event.
