Akron, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan Share Lead at Women's MAC's

Akron, Buffalo, and Eastern Michigan lead after Wednesday's opening session of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships here at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Zips, Bulls, and Eagles each tallied 66 points, followed by Bowling Green and Ohio with 62 points and Toledo with 54 points.

Akron took home the Women's 200 Medley Relay in record fashion to start things off on Wednesday night. The team of Ashley Niznik, Hannah Raspopovich, Erin Seiler, and Susan Franz finished the race in a time of 1:38.59. Ohio took home second place in 1:39.71, while EMU placed third after finishing in 1:40.04.

The final race of day one competition concluded with Buffalo claiming the 800 yard Freestyle Relay title. The team of Spencer Rodriguez, Hannah Miller, Brittney Walters, Jessica Powers finished in a pool record time of 7:14.82. EMU followed in second (7:15.92), while BGSU came in third at 7:16.79.

The MACtion continues Thursday with a preliminary session set for 11 a.m. ET to be followed by finals at 7 p.m.

Bowling Green State

The Bowling Green State University swim and dive team is tied for fourth place after Wednesday night's opening relay events at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Eastern Michigan.
 
The 200 medley relay team of Estela Davis, Kristin Filby, Maria Galic and Kayla Effinger nearly broke a school record, finishing the race with a time of 1:40.61 and placing fourth overall.
 
The second and final race of day one competition was the 800 freestyle relay where the Falcons shattered a BGSU school record and finished in third place. Victoria Griffin, Tara Capouch, Franziska Wohlert and Hannah Newman swam a team time of 7:16.79. The previous school record of 7:20.05 was set last season.
 
"We had a solid start of the meet," said head coach Petra Martin. "As I anticipated, it will be a very close meet and we can already see it after the first session. We are excited for tomorrow morning."
 
Defending MAC Champion Akron, along with Buffalo and EMU are all leading heading into day two of MAC Championships.
 
The Falcons return to Jones Natatorium tomorrow morning for preliminaries at 11 a.m. and then final swims will take place at 7 p.m.

 

Miami (OH)

Miami University's women's swimming and diving team is currently in seventh place out of eight teams in the MAC Championships.
Today was the first day of competition, which opened up with the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.

The 200-yard medley relay team for the RedHawks consisted of sophomore Brittany Dudzinski, sophomore Stephanie LeMire, freshman Katherine Kuhl and senior Annie Marquiss. They touched the wall in 1:41.77, earning them fifth place and 28 points.

Miami's 800-yard freestyle relay team was comprised of sophomore Elise Campbell, junior Sara Krueger, senior Caitlin Fujan and senior Whitney Mitchell. The team finished in seventh place, clocking in 7:25.60, receiving 24 points.
