Denver Men, IUPUI Women Lead Summit League

The 2014 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships began Wednesday night at the IU Natatorium, as the seven women's and six men's league teams competed in two relay events. Preseason favorites, the Denver men's and women's teams, are atop of the standings at the conclusion of day one.

Both the men’s and women’s Pioneer 200 medley relay teams started the night’s action by breaking the championship meet record in the event. The men clocked in at 1:27.31, a time that broke a mark that had been standing since 2009. The women touched in at 1:37.43, which was not only an all-time league and meet-best time but also an NCAA qualifying time.

Sophomore Coyote diver Greysen Hertting successfully defended her three-meter diving crown with a total of 273.75. Melissa Berger of IUPUI nipped at her heels with a mark of 273.20 while Miranda Knipfer of Omaha earned a spot on the medal stand with a score of 254.40.

In the nightcap, the Denver women broke their own league record they set at last year’s Summit League Championships with their 7:11.89 time in the 800 freestyle relay. Not to be outdone, yet again, the Denver men followed that up by setting their own all-time league record in the 800 freestyle relay, coming in at 6:24.78.

Both the men’s and women’s 200 medley relay teams of IUPUI and South Dakota State touched in at second and third place, respectively, to earn a spot on the medal stand. The Omaha 800 freestyle relay team claimed second place with IUPUI finishing just behind them on the podium. The IUPUI and South Dakota State men earned medals Wednesday night in the 800 freestyle relay with their second and third place finishes, respectively.
