Carolina Challenge Concludes

The University of North Carolina men’s and women’s swimming teams finished up competition for the Carolina College Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

“This weekend’s meet served a great purpose,” said head coach Rich DeSelm. “Those swimmers who aren’t on the conference team were able to compete in multiple sessions this weekend and see how their training paid off.”

Sessions 5 & 6 were held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday in Koury Natatorium.

Competition was highlighted by a multitude of season-best times, including 10 by the men’s team and one by the women’s team.

On the men’s side, Bailey Burt clocked two career-best times. Burt recorded a 1:51.46 in the 200-yard butterfly. His previous best was 1:52.73. Burt also erased his previous best in the 1650-yard freestyle by going 15:52.32. Coming into the invitational, his personal best was 16:11.95.

Matt Conway clocked his career-best in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:47.06, eclipsing his career best by almost two seconds.

In the men’s 100-yard freestyle, Graham Williams had a career-best time of 46.29. His previous career-best was 46.44.

Dalton Shaw recorded a career-best time of 2:00.20 in the 200-yard breaststroke, erasing his previous best of 2:01.12.

On the women’s side, Annie Goessling clocked a season-best time of 2:17.74 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Her previous best this season was 2:21.26.

“[This weekend] was the best meet like this that we’ve had in a good number of years. We got a lot of best times out of it and learned a lot too,” said DeSelm.

The Tar Heels will be back in action at the ACC Championships in Atlanta, Ga. The women’s team will start competition on Wed, Feb. 18 while the men’s team will begin on Wed, Feb. 25.

 

The NC State swimming and diving team concluded competition Sunday at the Carolina College Invitational, hosted by UNC-Chapel Hill. 

Several swimmers represented the program over the two-day event, held inside the Koury Natatorium, which consisted of three preliminary and finals sessions with no team scoring.

Wolfpack Men
Noah Franz, one of the five men that represented the team at the invitational, took fifth in the men’s 500 freestyle with a time of 5:34.59. 

The other four men represented the Pack in the men’s event, as Derek Hren and Ryan Wilkinson finished third and fourth with times of 1:50.33 and 1:51.83, respectively. Jacob Siar and Geoffrey Carter finished seventh and eighth with times of 1:53.99 and 1:54.22, in respective order. 

The team of Siar, Carter, Franz and Wilkinson swam a time of 3:24.30 in the men’s 400 medley relay. 

Wolfpack Women
Kristin Connors won the women’s 500 and 1650 free preliminary events with times of 4:48.85 and 16:38.39, in respectively. She also won the 200 free in the finals heat with a time of 1:49.21.

Kendall Pena earned second place in the women’s 400 IM with a time of 4:24.20 and finished third in the 500 free and 200 fly with times of 4:59.07 and 2:04.97, in respective order.

Caroline Estep took second in the finals of the 100 and 200 back with times of 55.88 and 2:01.17, while Mariah Hamil took third in the 100 butterfly preliminary event with a time of 55.90.

Nicole Giamber and Peyton Schrum finished second and fourth in the finals of the finals heat of the women’s 200 breaststroke with times of 1:04.24 and 1:05.12, in respective order.

In the women’s 200 individual medley, Nicole Giamber swam a time of 2:05.76 to finish seventh in the prelims.

Giamber also finished third in the finals of the 200 breast with a time of 2:19.54

The team will return to action with it travels to Atlanta, Ga., for the ACC Championships. The women’s swimming and men’s diving championship will be on Feb. 18-21 while the men’s swimming competition will be on Feb. 25-28.

 

Duke swimmers continued to rewrite Duke’s all-time top-10 charts Sunday on the final day of the inaugural Carolina College Invitational, held at North Carolina’s Koury Natatorium.

Freshman Hanna House collected her second individual win in as many days in Chapel Hill, completing a sweep of the women’s backstroke events with a win in the 200-yard final. Her 1:59.72 clocking Sunday afternoon was good for the sixth-fastest in program history. Fellow rookie Josh Furth was fourth in the same event on the men’s side, notching a season-best time of 1:50.98.

Sophomore Mike Seaberg earned a personal record in the 200 breaststroke final, touching at 2:03.21 for second place. Freshman Parker Pearson wrapped up the day by taking second in the mile with a 15:52.80 showing, ranking him ninth on the Blue Devils’ all-time top-10 chart.

Up next for the program, the women’s team travels to the 2015 ACC Championship Feb. 18-21 in Atlanta at Georgia Tech’s Aquatic Center. The men will compete there the following week, Feb. 25-28.
