Washington College Sweeps McDaniel

The Washington College men's swim team matched its best-ever dual meet record in a season by defeating visiting McDaniel College, 124-74, in a Centennial Conference meet today inside Casey Swim Center. The Shoremen, who broke a pair of pool records in the win, finish their dual meet season 9-1 overall, matching their program-best finish from a year ago, and 5-1 in conference meets. The Green Terror fell to 1-8 and 0-6 with the loss. 

Competing inside Casey Swim Center for the final time, senior Austin Yocum (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) broke the pool record in the 200 freestyle relay by winning the event in a Washington College season-best 1:44.07. He was one of six different Shoremen to win an individual event. Freshman Finny Dorsch (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) won the 1000 freestyle in 10:43.86 and was second in the 100 freestyle in 50.45. Freshman Cody Weiler(Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) won the 50 freestyle in 21.86 and was second in the 100 backstroke in 56.47. Junior Brent Longenecker (Maytown, Pa./Donegal) won the 100 freestyle in 48.90 and was second in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.87 to become the Shoremen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Senior Greg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) added a win in the 100 butterfly in a WC season-best 52.10, while junior Charles Logan(Durham, N.C./Riverside) took the 100 backstroke in 54.80. 

The Shoremen opened the meet by winning the 400 medley relay in a pool-record time of 3:35.89 turned in by sophomore Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]), freshman Kevin Mackenzie (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College H.S. [D.C.]), Lee, and Yocum. Lee, senior Steven Bilinski(Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven), Longenecker, and Yocum has the fastest 400 freestyle relay time of 3:19.20 as an exhibition entry.

Morgan had a pair of individual second-place finishes for the Shoremen in the 200 individual medley (2:00.10) and the 100 breaststroke (1:00.74), while Elliott was second in the 500 freestyle in 4:54.12.

The Shoremen will compete at the Centennial Conference Championships, hosted by Gettysburg College, February 20th-22nd.

 

The Washington College women's swim team won seven of 11 events to top visiting McDaniel, 111-94, in a Centennial Conference meet this afternoon inside Casey Swim Center. The Shorewomen finish their dual-meet season 5-6 overall and 2-5 in conference meets, while the Green Terror finish 2-9 and 1-6. 

Sophomore Ellen Maxwell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) won three events for the Shorewomen. Her winning time of 2:14.72 in the 200 individual medley was a Washington College season-best mark and made her the Shorewomen's fifth-fastest swimmer ever in the event. She also won the 1000 freestyle in 11:04.63 and the 500 freestyle in 5:25.31. 

Freshman Jennifer Clune (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) scored a big win for the Shorewomen in the penultimate event of the meet, winning the 100 breaststroke by one one-hundredth of a second with a time of 1:10.18. She was also second in the 100 freestyle in 56.46. Senior Alicia Howard (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) won the 200 freestyle in 2:03.38, while freshman Joelle Williamson(Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) took the 100 backstroke in a WC season-best 1:01.29, bettering her own standing as the Shorewomen's fourth-fastest swimmer ever in the event.

Freshman Katie Gorman (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), Williamson, Howard, and freshman Mackenzie Gaze (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs)wrapped up the win for the Shorewomen by claiming first in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, in a WC season-best 3:43.63.

Gaze added a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 2:03.47, while Gorman was second in the 50 freestyle in 25.36. Sophomore Megan Obarowski(Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) turned in a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.70.

The Shorewomen will compete at the Centennial Conference Championships, hosted by Gettysburg College, February 20th-22nd.
