Arizona Sweeps Arizona State

 The Arizona swimming and diving team dominated its senior day against Arizona State with both a men and women’s victory. The No. 18 men won 174-117, while the No.11 women defeated the No. 25 Devils 176.5-118.5 at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

For the women, the team of Bonnie Brandon, Lauren Stoeckle, Paige Kremer and Taylor Schick kicked off the day with a win in the 200 medley relay in 1:38.63. Up next, Tjasa Oder took first place in the 1000 free with a time of 9:50.66. Oder also took second in the 500 free after going head-to-head with ASU’s Jamie Friderichs (4:51.15), behind by only three-tenths of a second.

Brandon had a first place finish later in the day, winning the 200 back in 1:56.39. Cameron McHugh followed with a time of 1:58.50. Brandon took second in the 100 back (53.86), while McHugh took fourth (55.49).

The Cats added significant points to their lead in the 100 breast. Emma Schoettmer won with 1:00.34 while Stoeckle (1:01.41) and Sara Borendame (1:02.72) came in third and fourth, respectively. In the 200 breast, Schoettmer took first in 2:11.66 and Stoeckle finished third (2:15.59).

In three consecutive events, the Wildcats took the top two spots. Elizabeth Pepper finished first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.10 followed by Samantha Getzen with 2:03.77. In the 50 free, Schick placed first with 22.95 to edge out Kremer by four hundredths of second. The two switched in the 100 free with Kremer taking first (49.53) and Schick second (50.06).

In diving, the women went 1-2-3 in the 1-meter. Samantha Pickens took first with 293.63 followed by teammates Sally Hackett (281.93) and Michal Bower (280.13). In the 3-meter, Pickens finished first with a score of 320.18 while Hackett came in second with 318.68.

On the men’s side, Michael Meyer, Kevin Cordes, Renny Richmond and Brad Tandy started the day with a win in the 200 medley relay in 1:26.91. In the 1650 free, Ty Fowler won with a time of 15:22.23 followed by teammate Chris Wieser 15:36.36.

Thane Maudslien continued the momentum with a first place finish in the 200 free (1:37.38). The Wildcats went 2-3-4in both the 100 back and 100 free. In the 100 back, Alan Winder took first (48.59), while Rasmus Skjaerpe took second (49.99) and Austin Van Overdam in third (51.25). Brian Stevens took first in the 100 free (44.60) followed by Tandy (45.09) and Richmond (45.58).

Cordes took first in both the 100 breast (53.52) and 200 breast (1:58.44). Gage Crosby finished second in both events with 54.44 and 1:59.09, respectively. Meyer won the 200 fly in 1:45.84 followed by teammate Justin Wright (1:46.69).

Tandy finished first in the 50 free with a time of 19.83, increasing his winning streak to seven. Arizona went 1-2-3 in the 500 free with Nick Thorne winning in 4:25.92. Fowler came in second (4:30.01) followed by Nick Hogsed (4:32.65).

For diving, Rafael Quintero placed first in the 1-meter with a score of 369.90 while teammate Carter Craft took second with 308.10. In the 3-meter, the men went 1-2-3. Quintero won with 395.78 with Dominic Ricotta coming in second (356.55) and Craft finishing third (315.30).

The divers are back in action at the Pac-12 Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash. from Feb. 26th–28th. Arizona swim competes next at the Pac-12 Swimming Championships from Mar. 4th–7th.
