Texas Sweeps TCU

 No. 1 Texas (8-1) claimed 14 of 15 events and put away a 151-122 win over TCU on Senior Day Friday evening at UT’s Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. 
 
Texas opened the meet by taking the top four spots in the 200-yard medley relay.  UT’s “A” relay featuring senior Kip Darmody, freshmen Austin Temple and Joseph Schooling and junior Sam Lewis took the win in 1 minute, 29.50 seconds. 
 
Senior Clay Youngquist led a one-two Texas finish atop the 200 freestyle in 1:37.50.  Classmate Jake Ritter followed in 1:42.11.  Junior John Murray collected UT’s third straight win and claimed the 100 backstroke in 49.36. 
 
Senior Tripp Cooper, one of the nation’s elite butterfly swimmers, showed off his versatility and won the 100 breaststroke convincingly at 54.36 seconds.  Junior Matt Ellis and Schooling posted identical times of 54.58 while completing exhibition swims. 
 
Junior John Martens continued the Longhorns’ winning ways and easily claimed the 200 butterfly in 1:44.02, not far from the NCAA automatic-qualifying standard of 1:43.05.  Freshman Brett Ringgold led a one-two Longhorns finish in the 50 freestyle and won handily in 20.10.  Cooper picked up his second win of the day and ran away to victory in the 100 freestyle at 43.89. 
 
School record holder Will Licon maintained his dominance in the 200 breaststroke and cruised to victory in 1:57.11.  Junior Liam Lockwood added a second-place time of 1:59.99.  Junior Cory Bowersox produced a huge performance in the one-meter diving event and totaled 455.63 points, good for a personal best.  Sophomore Mark Anderson took second with 411.60 points.  Bowersox completed the diving sweep and claimed the three-meter board with 464.70 points.  Senior Will Chandler took second with 437.10 points. 
 
Sophomore Jack Conger and Ellis led the way in the 500 freestyle, where Conger clocked 4:26.85 for the win.  Ellis followed in second at 4:38.83.  Martens finished off a sweep of the butterfly events and won handily in 49.51.  Schooling raced his first 400 IM of the season and put away a convincing win in 3:55.10.    
 
Texas finished off the meet with its win in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:24.20. 
 
Texas hosts the Big 12 Championships from Feb. 25-28 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. 

 

No. 6 Texas (9-2) captured 13 of 15 events and raced to a 157-111 victory over TCU on Senior Day Friday evening at UT’s Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
 
Seniors Sarah Denninghoff, Gretchen Jaques, Kelsey LeNeave and Emily Rose Williams opened the meet with a convincing win in the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 41.81 seconds. 
 
Denninghoff returned on short rest to claim the next event, the 200 freestyle, in 1:46.00. Senior Kaitlin Pawlowicz followed in second at 1:51.00.  Sophomore Tasija Karosas led a one-two Texas finish atop the 100 backstroke in an impressive mid-season time of 53.48 seconds.  Sophomore Brynne Wong followed in second at 56.01. 
 
Jaques, the nation’s second-ranked swimmer in the 100-yard breaststroke, posted an easy win in the event and led a one-two-three Texas showing in 1:00.03.  Sophomore Jordan Surhoff clocked 1:01.35 for second place while senior Skylar Smith took third at 1:04.45. 
 
LeNeave, a top-10 swimmer nationally in the 200 butterfly, returned to win the event in 2:00.23.  Sophomore Madisyn Cox added a second-place mark of 2:01.71. 
 
Freshman Mimi Schneider registered a strong midseason time in the 50 freestyle and won the event in 22.32, good for the No. 21 time in the country this season.  Classmate Rebecca Millard led a Longhorns quartet atop the 100 freestyle and was victorious in 50.57.  Cox took second in 51.07 while freshman Sam Sutton posted a third-place mark of 52.89.  Sophomore Cheyenne Low took fourth in 53.21. 
 
Junior Meghan Houston led a Texas quartet atop the one-meter diving standings and took the win in 340.20.  Senior Emma Ivory-Ganja followed in second at 324.30.  Sophomore Murphy Bromberg took third at 296.10, and junior Kristina Hoffmann placed fourth at 288.38.  Ivory-Ganja won the three-meter board on her Senior Day with 389.55 points while Houston took second at 377.93. 
 
LeNeave notched her second individual win of the night in the 500 freestyle and cruised to victory in 4:54.41.  Likewise, Jaques earned her second win of the night and paced a trio of Horns atop the 100 butterfly in 54.25.  Wong added a second-place mark of 55.17. 
 
Texas swam the remaining events as exhibitions, but Karosas came away with the win in the 400 IM at 4:24.93.  The Horns finished off the meet with their win in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:34.21. 

 

The TCU men and women’s swimming and diving teams fell to the No. 2/6 Texas Longhorns on Friday night at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.
 
The men’s team moved to 4-2 this season after the 151-122 decision, while the women’s team now sits at 7-4 after the 157-111 result.
 
“Tonight wrapped up the dual portion of our season,” head coach Richard Sybesma said. “Now, we’ll shift our focus to the Big 12 Championship meet.”
 
The Horned Frogs swept the top mark in both the men’s and women’s 200 back thanks to performances by seniors Ali Bleasdell and Cooper Robinson.
 
Bleasdell earned a win in the women’s 200 back with a time of 2:02.43. It’s her second win of the season in the event and eighth overall during her senior campaign.
 
In the men’s event, Robinson paced to a time of 1:48.04 for his fifth win in the event this year and 11th overall this season.
 
TCU also claimed both 400 IM events. In the women’s 400 IM, junior Sara Brzozowski recorded a first-place finish, clocking in at 4:36.04. It’s her first win of the year in the event and second overall.
 
On the men’s side, freshman Carlos Hunnicutt won the event with a time of 4:02.49. It was his sixth overall win this season.
 
The Horned Frogs claimed the top four times in the women’s 200 breast after a win by freshman Lindsay Shabet at 2:21.62, her second of the season. Following Shabet were sophomore Ashley Dyke (2:24.66), junior Michelle Garland (2:26.98) and senior Carmen Lindmoen (2:27.90).
 
Robinson also tallied a second-place time in the men’s 100 back at 49.98 in a close race. He placed only 0.58 seconds behind the top finisher.
 
Freshman Devin Newton and Bleasdell posted their fastest times of the season in the women’s 100 back with third and fourth-place marks, respectively. Newton recorded a time of 58.36, while Bleasdell paced to a mark of 58.83.
 
In the women’s 500 free, junior Mikayla Winkler picked up a second-place finish behind a time of 5:06.86.
 
Junior Ford Story also finished second in the 100 breast with a time of 56.42.
 
Freshman Garrett Hills posted a second-place time in the men’s 100 free at 46.24. He also finished 0.01 seconds back of second place in the men’s 50 free, clocking in at 21.30.
 
In the men’s 100 fly, senior Adam Szilagyi finished second behind a mark of 50.92.
 
Senior Ricky Bradley tallied the team’s top marks in both the men’s 1-meter and 3-meter dive events. He recorded scores of 286.05 and 309.83, respectively.
 
On the women’s side, freshman Ty Sides led the Horned Frogs in the 1-meter with a score of 262.13. In the 3-meter dive, senior Courtney Cheek had the team’s top mark at 265.20, a season-high for her in the event.
 
Up next for the Horned Frogs is a return to Austin for the Big 12 Championships on Feb. 25-28.
