The Indiana men’s and women’s swimming teams wrapped up the three-day Hoosierland Invitational on a strong note Saturday night at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.
Preliminary races on Saturday were long course meter events, while the finals were conducted in short course yards.
The third and final night of the Hoosierland Invitational got off to a great start for Indiana, as Jackson Miller set the school record in the 1,000 freestyle with his split in the 1,650, touching the wall in a time of 8:56.16.
As for the 1,650, the Hoosiers had seven swimmers notch NCAA B cut times as IU finished second through eighth – Andrej Ivanovic (15:18.33), Adam Destrampe (15:21.87), Jack Collins (15:21.87), Jackson Miller (15:26.10), Ethan Curl (15:27.16), Trey Hubbuch (15:27.23) and Grayson Smith (15:30.24).
With their respective times, Andrej Ivanovic ranks 16th and Adam Destrampe ranks 18th all-time at Indiana.
On the women’s side, IU went 1-2 with a pair of NCAA B cut times in the 1,650 freestyle. Haley Lips hit the wall first in 16:11.59, while Stephanie Marchuck was second with a mark of 16:13.55.
In the women’s 200 backstroke, the Hoosiers had four swimmers earn NCAA B cuts, led by Marie Chamberlain who earned the win with a career-best time of 1:55.25. Shelly Drozda was second with a career-best time of 1:56.60, while Ali Rockett was third with a career-best 1:57.49. Rachel Matsumura was fourth with a season-best time of 1:58.21.
With their respective times, Marie Chamberlain ranks 11th, Shelly Drozda 15th and Ali Rockett 19th all-time at Indiana in the event.
For the Hoosier men, Bob Glover won the 200 backstroke with a career-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:42.02 that makes him the fourth-fastest 200 backstroker in school history. Ryan Gordon placed second with a season-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:45.94.
In the women’s 100 freestyle “A” final, Gabriela Rajic led four Hoosiers with NCAA B cut times, placing second with a career-best time of 49.32. Grace Vertigans was third with a season-best time of 49.36, while Kaitlin Kitchens was fourth with a career-best mark of 49.84. Delaney Barnard was fifth, tying her career-best time of 49.90.
In the “B” final, IU’s Holly Spears hit the wall first with a career-best and NCAA B cut time of 49.68. With their respective times, Gabriela Rajic ranks eighth, Holly Spears 11th, Grace Vertigans 14th and Kaitlin Kitchens 15th all-time in the event.
For the men, Ali Khalafalla took second in the 100 freestyle with a season-best time of 43.83, while Sam Lorentz finished third with a season-best time of 44.28.
In the 200 breaststroke, Laura Morley finished first with a career-best and NCAA B cut time of 2:14.49, ranking her as the 14th fastest 200 breast swimmer in school history.
On the men’s side, Tanner Kurz touched the wall first in the 200 breaststroke with a season-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:54.35. Cody Taylor was second, coming in with a career-best mark of 1:55.86 that ranks him as the sixth-fastest 200 breast swimmer in program history.
In the women’s 200 butterfly, Gia Dalesandro led a trio of Hoosier swimmers that earned NCAA B cuts in a sweep of the top-three spots. Gia Dalesandro timed in with a season-best 1:56.85, while Olivia Barker was second in a season-best 1:57.75. Bailey Pressey was third in a season-best mark of 1:59.11.
Max Irwin had a tremendous swim for the Hoosiers in the 200 butterfly, winning with a career-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:43.75. Irwin’s mark is the ninth-fastest 200 fly in school history.
In the women’s final event of the night – the 400 freestyle relay – the IU team of Haley Lips, Gabriela Rajic, Holly Spears and Grace Vertigans won with a NCAA B cut time of 3:16.83. The team’s impressive mark is the fourth-fastest time in school history.
For the men in the 400 freestyle relay, the Hoosier team of Oliver Patrouch, Sam Lorentz, Tanner Kurz and Ali Khalafalla won with a time of 2:55.42 – the fifth-fastest time in program history.
In the LCM prelims of the Hoosierland Invitational on Saturday, Indiana had another impressive session, tallying six more Olympic Trials cuts and setting one school record.
Ali Khalafalla continued his great meet, setting the Indiana school record in the 100 LCM freestyle with an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 49.46.
Along with Khalafalla, Tanner Kurz (200 breast, 2:17.46), Bob Glover (200 back, 2:02.29) and Max Irwin (200 fly, 2:01.47) all had Olympic Trials qualifying marks for the Hoosier men.
For the IU women, Rachel Matsumura (200 back, 2:16.12) and Olivia Barker (200 fly, 2:13.12) each notched an Olympic Trials cut time.
The Indiana men’s and women’s swimming teams will be in action next on January 15-16, when the team begins the new year at a quad meet in Atlanta against Georgia Tech, Michigan and Alabama.
Pacific
The Tigers finished off their final meet of 2015 at the Hoosierland Invitational. Pacific competed in the 100 Free, their only event on the final day. The next meet will be a men's only meet at Stanford on January 8. The next time the Tigers swim at home will be January 9 when both the men's and women's teams take on Cal Poly.
Miles MacKenzie came in fifth in the SCY 100 Free, finishing with a time of 44.52. Mitchell Ongstad was the next fastest Tiger with a time of 44.89. Georan Meendering came in just a bit behind Ongstad, finishing at 45.06. All three of those times were the fastest of any Pacific swimmer this year in the 100 Free.
