Hawkeye Invite - Day 2

Iowa Men

The University of Iowa men's swimming and diving team leads the 2015 Hawkeye Invitational with 638 points through two days at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
 
University of Denver holds  a close second place with a score of 624, University of Incarnate Word claiming third with 342 points, and Drury University comes in fourth with 252.
 
"We had a great night tonight, a lot of personal bests and a school record. We stepped up and won the heats, which was what we needed to do.” said UI head coach Marc Long. “Over all it was a great night and we have to get ready for tomorrow night.”
 
Iowa opened Saturday’s finals with a 1-3-4 finish in the 200-medley relay. Freshman Kenneth Mende, senior Roman Trussov, sophomore Jerzy Twarowski, and freshman Jack Smith took first place, touching in at 1:26.48.
 
Senior Andrew Parker, senior Mike Nelson, senior Jackson Allen, and junior Jackson Halsmer took third, posting a time of 1:28.94.
 
Senior David Ernstsson and junior Kyle Gannon finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 free. Ernstsson touched in 1:38.31, while Gannon was just .04 behind at 1:38.35.
 
Iowa got NCAA “B” qualifying times from Twarowski and Allen in the 100-fly.  The pair claimed first with a time of 46.97 and third place with a time of 47.78, respectively.
 
Mende brought in a “B” cut in the 100 back, swimming to a second place finish with a time of 47.83.
Parker placed fifth place finish with a time of 49.47.
 
Iowa got a pair of NCAA “B” qualifying times in the 100 breast. Trussov touched first with a season-best time of 53.32, while Nelson was third with a season-best time of 54.83.
 
The Hawkeyes shined on the 1-meter springboard, boasting the top four finishers. Freshman William Brenner won the event with a season-best score of 365.00 -- an NCAA Zone mark.  
 
Junior Brandis Heffner was the runner-up with a 328.90, senior Addison Boschult was third with a score of 315.15, and senior Andrew Hull was fourth with a 298.50.


Iowa Women

The University of Iowa women's swimming and diving team leads the Hawkeye Invitational with 621 points through two days of competition at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
 
The University of Denver trails Iowa at 524, followed by the University of Incarnate Word at 342, and in fourth, Drury University at 252.

The Hawkeyes posted a1-3-4 finish to start the night in the 200-medley relay. Senior Allie Orvis, junior Emma Sougstad, freshman Kelly McNamara, and senior Olivia Kabacinski won the event with a time of 1:39.47 -- the second-best in program history.
 
The Hawkeyes claimed a runner-up performance to end the night in the 800-free relay.  Junior Serena Wanasek, senior Oliviia Kabacinski, senior Jennifer Weigand, and sophomore Nikol Lagodzinska touched the wall at 7:21.41, a season best time and seventh-fastest time in program history.
 
Iowa got a record-breaking time from McNamara in her 100-fly preliminary performance.  She touched in a record time of 53.90 seconds.  The time is an NCAA “B” standard.
 
Sophomore Mekenna Scheitlin took third in the 100-fly, posting a time of 54.84, fifth-fastest time in program history, Tereysa Lehnertz followed in fourth place touching at 54.94.
 
Iowa got a first place finish from Meghan Lavelle in the 100-back. Lavelle swam a time of 54.31, an NCAA “B” standard and topping her own time to claim fourth-fastest time in program history. Orvis came in fourth with a time of 55.32.
 
Sougstad tallied another first-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.41.  The Forest City, Iowa, native posted a season-best and NCAA “B” qualifying time of 1:00.23 during the morning prelims.  
 
Sophomore Shea Hoyt also had a “B” qualifying time, posting a 1:02.40 in the 100 back, claiming third place.
 
Iowa also posted a win in the 200 free when Kabacinski finished with a season-best time of 1:48.14.
 
In the diving well, junior Lydia Lehnert was runner-up on the 3-meter springboard. She finished with a score of 296.00, a season best. Sophomore Morgan Rafferty placed fifth with a score of 273.65.
 
Day three of the Hawkeye Invitational begins Sunday at 10 a.m. (CT). 

 

Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Two more records fell as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee swimming and diving teams continued to post outstanding results in the second day of action at the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Saturday.

One day after notching 60 season-best times, UWM topped that with another 84 top times of the year in a very busy day two of action, highlighted by both Jacob Barson and Addison Skogman topping freshman records.

Skogman kicked things off with the very first event of the day – the 400 IM. The freshman posted an outstanding time of 4:26.49 for a new UWM freshman record, besting current assistant coach Maggie Beck's previous mark of 4:26.77 set in 2010. Sophomore Alena Bodnaruk (4:35.10), Adrienne DiFoggio (4:35.34) and Kiersten Seidel (4:39.49) all also made it back to finals Saturday with season-best times.

An impressive five swimmers made the evening finals on the men's side. Senior Nic Halverson led the way, winning the C-final in 4:01.69 – the 11th-fastest time of the day. Freshman Dane Van Allen (4:09.85), freshman Zach Kishpaugh (4:11.16), senior Joe Chokran (4:10.59) and freshman Adriel Huerta (4:16.72) all also posted significant season-best times.

Barson took down another freshman record – this time in the men's 100 breaststroke. The Arlington Heights, Ill. native touched the wall in prelims in 55.86 – smashing the previous record of 57.07 set in 2014. Taylor Wisdorf (58.15) and Chokran (59.25) also did well, taking 20th and 23rd, respectively.

Three women made the B-final in the women's 100 breast. Freshman Jenn Kordik led the way with a solid time of 1:04.44 for 11th. Senior Hannah Lucas (1:05.03) and sophomore Natalie O'Connell (1:05.12) were close behind, taking 13th and 14th. All three times rank in the top-eight in the league so far this year.

One night after taking third in the 50 freestyle with a school-record time, junior Mandie Siehs followed that up with a fourth-place showing in the 200 free Saturday. Siehs got faster as the day went on, clocking in at 1:50.57 in finals – the second-fastest time in the Horizon League thus far this season. Danielle Kudis had her best time of 1:51.81 in prelims, while junior Natalie Johnson touched the wall at 1:52.57 in finals.

Sophomore Sara Bentley flirted with a school record in the 100 backstroke. The Ames, Iowa native came in seventh overall with a career-best time of 55.83, within half a second of the school record. Kady Ruemmele (58.05) and Kristin Zablocki (57.80) also had strong showings Saturday.

On the men's side, Kyle Gerum led the way, just missing a win the C-final in 50.85. Evan Kuker also did well, clocking in at 51.71 in prelims.

The Panthers were once again one of the top diving schools in competition on the day. Rachel Margis entered the three-meter finals as the top seed and finished fourth overall with a score of 282.30. Meanwhile, two Panthers finished in the top-6 on the men's side on one meter. Marcel Harris was fifth at 289.05, with Andres Villa right behind at 277.85.

In other individual action, Bentley pulled double duty to lead the women in the 100 fly with a time of 56.32. Freshman Anthony Kolbus led the men in the same event in 50.05. In the 200 free, defending league champ Nick Menninga led UWM at 1:43.35.

The Panther women posted two outstanding relay times on the day. The 200 medley relay of Bentley, Kordik, Ruemmele and Siehs combined for a time for 1:44.03, taking sixth. Meanwhile, the 800 free relay group of Nicole Hutchins, Johnson, Kudis and Siehs checked in at 7:37.55. Both times stand second in the league so far this year.

On the men's side, the 800 free relay team of Tim Halverson, N. Halverson, Erik Wahlgren and Menninga placed seventh in 6:47.78. The 200 medley relay team of Kuker, Wisdorf, Kolbus and Menninga posted a team time of 1:31.97. Those times both stand third in the league this season.

 

Nebraska

The Nebraska diving team continued competition in the three-meter dive at day two of the Hawkeye Invitational. Anna Filipcic continued her strong weekend capturing first-place in the three meter dive.

Filipcic posted a score of 303.80 earning her a spot in the finals and the second highest score in the prelims. Filipcic compiled a score of 313.10 in the finals, good enough to earn a first-place finish. Filipcic notched a first-place finish in yesterday’s one-meter dive.

Katrina Voge also was a strong performer for the Huskers. Voge posted a score of 260.40 securing her a spot in the finals and the eighth best prelims score. Voge turned in score of 237.00 Saturday night capturing eighth-place.

Francesca Giganti and Kara Cottrell also competed for the Huskers Saturday afternoon. Giganti earned a 15th-place finish in the three-meter dive after posting a score of 236.20. Cottrell finished in 25th-place with a score of 204.55.
