Hulme Added to Denver Staff

University of Denver swimming head coach Brian Schrader has announced the addition of assistant coach Michael Hulme to the coaching staff for the 2015-16 season.

Hulme rejoins the DU coaching staff after serving as an assistant coach for the Michigan State men’s and women’s swimming and diving program for the past two seasons. He previously served as an assistant on Denver’s coaching staff during the 2012-13 campaign.

“I am very pleased to be able to bring Mike back to our staff,” Schrader said. “He grew up in the rocky mountain west and having worked here as a coach before, he knows what a special place this is to be a student athlete. He will bring a great enthusiasm and knowledge about swimming and I know he will have good rapport with our athletes and staff.”

The Bozeman, Mont., native is a graduate of Ohio State University where he was a four-year letter winner of the varsity swim program under Coach Bill Wadley. He received his undergraduate degree in economics and political science in the spring of 2011. Hulme was a four-time Honorable Mention Scholar All-American, a four-time OSU Scholar Athlete, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and an eight-time OSU Deans List recipient.

Hulme was a member of the 2010 Big Ten Championship team and competed in the 2011 U.S. Nationals/World Championship Trials. He qualified for and competed in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing 27th in the 400 individual medley. Hulme also qualified for and competed in the 2008 U.S. Open, the 2009 U.S. World Championship Trials, the 2010 National Championships and the 2011 U.S. Nationals/World Championship Trials.

“He knows how important good culture, hard work and attention to detail and technique are to competing at the highest levels in our sport,” Schrader added.  “Mike has been a part of the best high school program in the country (Bolles), and as a student athlete at Ohio State, his experience winning a Big Ten team title helps him enforce that the bar has to be set high. He has done a great job helping athletes improve here at Denver and at his other coaching assignments, and it will be great to have him back in the mix.”

After graduating from Ohio State, Hulme spent one season as an assistant coach for the Purdue University women’s swim team. During his time at Purdue, Hulme aided in coaching, training and recruiting, while learning from the 2009-10 Big Ten Women's Coach of the Year John Klinge. He also assisted in organizing, planning and executing all aspects of recruiting trips, conducted campus tours for recruits and their parents and arranged academic meetings with advisors.

“I am thrilled to accept this position to come back and coach at DU,” Hulme said. “Having been at Denver before, I know that I will be working with a motivated and creative coaching staff, a very supportive Athletic Department and exemplary student athletes who excel at the highest level in the classroom and in the pool.

“I look forward to working with Brian and Alicia again, as well as the opportunity to coach some of the swimmers who were freshmen and recruits during my previous time here.  DU Swimming and Diving is on a great trajectory, and I cannot wait to contribute to our athlete’s success at the highest level of our sport.”

The Pioneers will begin the 2015-16 season with the Denver Relays on Oct. 10 at noon at El Pomar Natatorium.
