Commitment to McKendree Swimming Starts At Top

McKendree University, which will begin competition in the 2016-17 season has announced the hiring of former Northwestern women's head coach Jimmy Tierney.  Tierney joins the Bearcats after a nationwide search.  Tierney led the Wildcats for 21 years following six years as an assistant.

McKendree is undergoing a growth spurt in athletics having added men's and women's hockey, men's and women's swimming, and more.  Construction has begun this week on a new public/private multi-purpose complex.  When completed it will include two new pools, weight facilities, team rooms and locker rooms.  Additionally, the facility will feature a pair of ice rinks and a destination hotel.

Though new to campus, the swimming is no stranger to McKendree President Dr. James Dennis.  Dennis has long wanted to add swimming to the growing campus for a reason - he comes from a family of coaches.   President Dennis previously coached at Southern Cal under Peter Daland and later at Occidental College.  Dennis was instrumental in USC's recruitment of such high-profile names as John Naber, Joe and Mike Bottom, Rob and Ron Orr, the Furniss brothers, and Frank Heckl).  Dennis' father also led Occidental where he coached legendary Alabama coach Don Gambril.

That means the expecations are high for Tierney and he's up for the challenge.

"It's a hidden gem.  It really is." explained Tierney.  "The campus is absolutely beautiful and I'm excited to get up and running."

President Dennis was similarly excited, highlighting Tierney's track record at Northwestern, passion for the student-athlete.  "He is a classy man who will fit in well at our institution."

McKendree will also add diving and water polo for both men's and women's programs.  "Our students will have first rate facilities, a proven and respected coach, tremendous local support and the opportunity for a top education in a beautiful setting," explained Dr. Dennis.  "It will be a combination that is hard to beat!"
