Maguire Named Assistant at Denver

Former Pioneer swimmer Mark Maguire (2009-2013) has been hired as the new assistant coach for the University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving team, head coach Brian Schrader announced today.

“Mark brings a really great knowledge and passion with his coaching presence, and we are excited to have him start with our team this fall,” Schrader said. “As a former athlete within our program, he was a role model and leader, and I know he will continue that road as a coach.”

Maguire was a team captain during his time at DU and a four year letterman. He graduated from the university in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science. The Denver native has been serving as an assistant coach for the University of Denver Hilltoppers for the past two and a half years.

The Hilltoppers (TOPS) Swim Team is a year-round aquatics program that gives youth the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of swimming technique and training to help develop specific age group swimmers. Maguire led the Crimson and Silver groups which consisted of 30 young kids representing the club at local, regional and national meets.

“It has been rewarding to watch him grow as a coach with the local age group programs that he has worked with, and I know that he was a great resource as a staff member with the DU Hilltoppers,” Schrader added.
Maguire is looking forward to the opportunity to join the DU swimming and diving coaching staff, and help the program continue to build on its recent achievements.

“I'm very excited to be part of the coaching staff for the DU swimming and diving program that has, for the past several years, been continually building on previous years' success,” he said. “Under Brian, Alicia and Channing, DU is annually sending individuals and relays to the NCAA Championships as well as having representatives on the international stage. I can't thank them enough for allowing me the opportunity to learn from them and grow as a coach.”
The DU swimming and diving team will open up the 2015-16 season with the Denver Relays at noon on Oct. 10 at El Pomar natatorium.
