Nova Southeastern Adds 19

The Nova Southeastern University swimming and diving program looks to build on a historic 2014-15 season as 19 new recruits will be added to the upcoming roster.

The Sharks are coming off of a season in which the women's team took home the Sunshine State Conference title, and the two sides combined for six individual NCAA National Championships as well as 18 top-three finishes at that same championship meet. All told, the program also earned 60 total All-American nods following the season.

Head coach Hollie Bonewit-Cron will add 10 male and nine female swimmers to a combined 33 returnees, which includes all four National Champions.

"The quality of student-athletes that we have coming to our program this year can be attributed to the hard work our staff puts in to find those who will fit in with our program," said Bonewit-Cron. "We look for student-athletes who are academically sound and can compete at a level we accept. We always hope that our efforts fill the shoes of our talented outgoing seniors as well as continue the success that we had last year to continue the trend upward. This combination will contribute to our future success in years to come. We are fortunate to have 19 new Shark swimmers that will help rise our program even higher both in the water and in the classroom."

The group of male newcomers includes three transfers and six incoming freshmen. Two transfers will be sophomores: Devon D'Augusta, from New Preston, Connecticut, and most recently Montclaire State University; and Malique Elder, who competed at LSU and hails from Dayton, Ohio. Elder posted personal bests of 20.7 (50-yard freestyle) and 45.45 (100-yard freestyle) at the 2014 SEC Championships.

David Hudson (Tyler, Texas and Lee High School) is the first of the six new freshmen. He competed for Metroplex Aquatics and has PR's of 52.21 and 1:51.84 in the backstrokes and 1:53.7 and 4:03.22 in the individual medleys. Another new Shark expected to add depth in freestyle is Jake Jones (Fairview, Pennsylvania and McDowell High School).

Three Floridians joining the squad are Corey Klemm (Cape Coral and Cape Coral High School), Mark Marshburn (St. Petersburg and Shorecrest Prep Academy) and Judson Robertson (Destin and Niceville High School). Klemm adds depth to backstrokes with PR's of 57.33 and 2:09.69, as well as 52.9 in the 100-yard butterfly. Marshburn was 10th in the 100-yard freestyle at the FHSAA Class 1A Championships, swimming a 48.5, while Robertson was eighth in the FHSAA Class 3A 100-yard backstroke at 54.16.

Three international swimmers round out the men's class: Quentin Muffat (Nice, France for the club team Olympique Nice Nation), junior transfer Victor Tarin from Lewis University (and Godelleta, Spain), and David Van Der Colff (Prestoria, South Africa and TUKS SPORTS High School). Muffat will compete in mid-distance and sprint freestyle events, with a long course time of 25.52 in the 50-yard, while his fastest 100 time is 54.96. Tarin was a mid-distance freestyler at Lewis, with times of 1:36.70 and 4:25.48, respectively, and his 100-yard butterfly (49.7) and sprint freestyle times (20.96 & 44.72) could also be a factor for the Shark relay teams. Van Der Colff will arrive on campus in August after competing at the 2015 World Championships for Botswana. He has posted short course meter times of 55.5 in the 100 backstroke and 23.7 in the 50 freestyle.

The women's recruits are made up of nine freshmen, all from the states.

Nicole Ferguson (Grimes, Indiana and Johnston Senior High School) will add depth to the 200-yard backstroke, while Virginia "Gigi" Gibbs (Dover, Florida and Strawberry Crest High School) will help the Sharks' butterfly, after placing ninth at the FHSAA Class 4A Championships with a time of 57.48. Aimee Gysegem (Warren, Ohio and Howland High School) will look to concentrate on mid-distance and longer in freestyle, will personal bests of 1:55.41 (200-yard) and 5:08.18 (500-yard).

Melissa Karman (Hixson, Tennessee) joins the Sharks from the Baylor School, with sprint free times of 23.7 and 53.8, and could also make an immediate impact on the relay squads. Maddy McCloskey (Palmer, Massachusetts and Northampton High School) will swim mid-distance and distance freestyle, and Emily Mehlhope (Colorado Springs, Colorado and Dogerty High School) will help the Sharks' backstroke depth.

Also joining the squad is Caroline Oster (Lake Mary, Florida and Lake Mary High School), who placed ninth at the Class 4A Florida State Championship in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.80. She will also add depth to the 200-yard butterfly, with a PR of 2:10.27. Alyssa Roehr (Cottage Grove, Wisconsin and Monona Grove High School) placed highly at the WIAA Division 2 State Meet, finishing third in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:09.56, and sixth in the 100-yard freestyle at 53.8. Another addition, expected to compete in the breaststroke, is Laura White (League City, Texas and Clear Springs High School).

The regular season begins for the Shark swim program in mid-September.
