Pacific Splits with UC Bakersfield

A night after a long triple dual meet at home, the Pacific swim team hit the road for the first time as the men and the women swam at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, Oct. 25. Getting the win in a rival pool, the women beat the Roadrunners, 162-132, while the men fell, 198-96.

Starting fast and never letting up, the women took 10 of 14 events on the day to secure the victory. The women took hold of the meet over the first five events as Pacific was perfect to start the competition.

The Tigers flew out of the gates in the 200 Medley Relay as the team of Haley Preston, Cristina Mardones, Kenna Ramey, and MaryElla Randall clocked in with a winning time of 1:47.30. The event victory was the first of the season for the Tigers' A team after swimming the event for the first time last night.

With the relay under their belts, the Tigers looked to sophomore Margaux Verger Gourson to keep the momentum going. Picking up where she left off, the second-year ace came up with another 1000 Free victory with a time of 10:20.94 to end 32 seconds better than second place. Verger Gourson would go on to win the 200 Free and 500 Free to once again complete the triad for the second-straight day.

In addition to running the Free events, the Tigers came out with pairs of victories in the 100 and 200 Back and Breast events. Following suit with Verger Gourson, Preston fed off her early win in the relay to come out on top in both Back events. Preston won the 100 Back by touching at 58.45, just in front of a pair of her teammates as the Tigers took the top three spots. In the 200 Back, Preston and the Tigers repeated the feat with the top three spots as Preston won with a time of 2:06.06.

In the Breast events, Maradones got back into the fun as the third-year Tiger picked up back-to-back wins in the 100 and 200 events. In the shorter event, Mardones just out touched her classmate, Camorah King, 1:07.15 to 1:07.19. Mardones would grab her second individual win a few events later in the 200 with a time of 2:21.46. She would complete her perfect day in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.64 to end with four wins in four events.

Rounding out the day's performance, freshman Kenna Ramey grabbed her second win with a victory in the 100 Fly.

For the men, the day was dominated by sophomore Curtis Klein who won both the 100 Back and 200 Back events for the second time this season. His time of 58.45 in the 100 Back was good enough for his third win in the event in as many tries. Winning the 200 for the second time, Klein clocked in at 1:53.51, just in front of the rest of the competition.

The men's final win came in the 100 Free sprint where freshman Stewart Harrison out touched Bakersfield's Gabriel Bertrand by :02 seconds with a time of 47.28.

Pacific's women are next in the pool against Cal State East Bay at home on Nov. 21. The meet is the final home meet for the Tigers for the season and is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
