Florida International Tops Florida Southern

The FIU swimming team (2-0) picked up a 124-78 victory at Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Britney Fant earned the first two victories of her career, while senior Johanna Gustafsdottir picked up two more wins to up her season total number of first place finishes to four.

Fant, who earned two second place finishes in the season opener vs. Florida Atlantic, followed that up with two top finishes on Saturday. The Texas native’s first win came in the 1000-freestyle, where she posted a time of 10:36.31. Fant’s second victory came over in the 200-butterfly, earning a mark of 2:08.16. Fant was also part of the 400-freestyle relay team that finished first.

Gustafsdottir’s first victory of the day came in the 400-IM where she earned a time of 4:28.91. Her second victory came in the 500-freestyle with a mark of 5:00.80, which is a new career best time for her. Gustafsdottir was also part of the FIU 400-medley and 400-freestyle relay teams that earned first place finishes.

Freshman Silvia Scalia earned career victory number four as she earned her second win in the 200-backstroke, posting a mark of 2:01.81. FIU’s other individual winner was junior Jean Madison who earned a time of 2:24.82 in the 200-breaststroke, giving her a second individual victory this season.

The Panthers return to the pool next Saturday at Indian River at 12 p.m.
