Carleton Finishes Up at St. Thomas Relay Meet

The Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team began the 2014-2015 season on Saturday with the University of St. Thomas Relay Meet. The top results for the unique event included victories in the 300-yard backstroke relay and 200-yard freestyle relay and second-place finishes in the 300-yard backstroke relay and the 400-yard IM relay.

The St. Thomas Relay Meet consists of a series of relays, including the traditional 200-, 400-, and 800-yard freestyle relays. This unique event also features the mixed 200-yard relay; 300-yard butterfly, backstroke, and breaststroke relays; 400-yard IM relay; and the 1100-yard animal relay.

“This meet has always provided us with a good opportunity to get a glimpse of our potential and to check where we are as a team,” said Carleton head coach Andy Clark. “From the coaching side, (Associate Head Coach Brooke Plotz) and I were impressed with what we saw from both teams in terms of the efforts and skill that they showed today. It was especially good to see the new team members in action and to see them contribute. It is early in the season and while fitness values are still being developed, both teams showed good strength in their racing form.”

The Knights won the 300-yard backstroke relay with a time of 2:43.83. Aaron Schwab (So./Elk River, Minn./Elk River), Noah Brackenbury (Fy./Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill), Alex Mathson (So./Verona, Wis./Verona), and Jonathan Brodie (Jr./Fremont, Calif./Washington) took part in this first-place finish.

The Knights captured another victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Stephen Grinich (Jr./Mcminnville, Ore./Mcminnville), Evan Lahr (So./Monticello, Minn./Monticello), Wilson Josephson (Jr./Mount Hermon, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon), and Brackenbury posted a time of 1:27.29.

Carleton posted a second-place finish in the 300-yard breaststroke relay, with swimmers Brackenbury, Lahr, Colin Lau (Fy./Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins), and Evan Harris (Sr./Lexington, S.C./Lexington) finishing at a time of 2:59.87.

The Knights also took second in the 400-yard IM relay with Lau, Schwab, Mathson, and Harris joining on a time of 3:49.24.

The Knights will compete at the Cows, Colleges, and Contentment Classic next Saturday, Nov. 1 starting at 11 a.m. The diving competition will be held at Carleton’s Thorpe Pool, while the swimming races will be contested at St. Olaf’s Skoglund Center Natatorium.
