Texas A&M Men Top Incarnate Word

The Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving team downed the University of Incarnate Word Cardinals 135-98 in dual meet action on Friday night at the Ann Barshop Natatorium on the UIW campus.

The Aggies (1-1) were dominant in their first dual meet win of the season with victories in 11 of 13 events against the Cardinals, including sweeping the top two spots in six events.

It was a triumphant return to his hometown for senior captain Luke Shaw as the former Alamo Heights High School Mule logged two individual wins and swam the anchor leg on the winning 200-yard free relay in the last race of the day. Shaw won the 200 free in 1:40.57 and the 100 butterfly in 50.01, and contributed a 21.05 split in the relay.

“That was, by far, the best 200 free I’ve ever seen Luke do in an in-season race,” Aggie head coach Jay Holmes said. “Luke really did a nice job in front of the hometown folks. In both his wins, he led from wire-to-wire. It’s nice to see him swimming this well this early in the school year.”

Also logging a pair of victories was redshirt freshman diver Tyler Henschel. In fact, Henschel and teammate Zachary Stockton swept the top two spots in both springboard dives. Henschel won the one-meter with a score of 321.05 and the three-meter with 358.75.

Sophomore Jacob Gonzales swept the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and swam the second leg of the victorious 200 free relay. Gonzales won the 50 in 20.80, followed closely by junior Cory Bolleter of San Antonio in 21.02, and the 100 free in 46.51.

Tallying solo individual wins were a trio of freshmen – Brock Bonetti in the 100 back (50.30), Mauro Castillo in the 100 breaststroke (56.91) and Gonzalo Carazo in the 400 IM (4:00.73). Junior Alexandros Theocharidis was second in the 100 back in 50.98, and Carazo was second in the 100 breast in 58.60.

The Aggies opened the competition with a win in the 200-yard medley relay with the foursome of Bonetti, Castillo, freshman Justin Morey and Bolleter touching the wall in 1:32.26, and closed the meet with the 200 free relay of Bolleter, Gonzales, Morey and Shaw winning in 1:23.32.
