Fairfield Swpet By Fordham

The Fairfield University men’s swimming & diving team fell to Fordham University this evening at the RecPlex Pool. The men were edged 171-118.

Junior Connor Daly (Reading, Mass.) posted three individual victories and broke two program records. Daly captured the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:08.73, breaking his own program record of 2:09.12 previously set on February 1, 2014. In the 400m IM, he earned first place points with a time of 4:46.66, breaking the previous program record of 4:50.33 set by Drew Kingman on January 27, 2007. Daly also posted a winning time of 2:30.54 in the 200m breaststroke.

Rookie Michael Capodanno (Centerport, N.Y.) was the runner-up in the 100m freestyle event. Capodanno clocked in with a personal best time of 55.80.

Senior Jay Cook (Lynnfield, Mass.) placed third in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:02.79 while sophomore Scott McGinty (Reading, Mass.) finished closely behind in fourth (2:02.92). McGinty also placed fourth in the 50m freestyle (25.37) and the 100m butterfly with a personal best time of 1:00.66.

The 200m freestyle relay of Cook, McGinty, Capodanno, and Collin Hayes (Northport, N.Y.) earned first place points with a time of 1:41.16 while the relay team of Robert Hansen (Millbury, Mass.), Jameson Duncan (Stamford, Conn.), Andrew Robinson (Warwick, R.I.) and Nick Cannone (Suffield, Conn.) earned second place points with a time of1:48.95.

Fairfield took the top three spots in both the men’s 1-meter and 3-meter diving. Senior Evan Barr (Malvern, Pa.) captured the 3-meter event with a score of 251.63 while sophomore Daniel Pires (Chelmsford, Mass.) was the runner-up with a 240.68. Pires captured the 1-meter event with a 263.25 while Barr was the runner-up with a 238.58. Will Sullivan (East Kingston, N.H.) placed third on both boards, posting a 180.30 score on the 3-meter and a 220.13 on the 1-meter. Rookie Benjamin Martin (Quincy, Mass.) recorded a score of 129.08 on the 3-meter and made a 140.55 1-meter mark.

The Fairfield men’s (0-2) team will continue its home stand. The swimming & diving team will return to the RecPlex Pool on Saturday, October 25 for an Alumni Meet. After this weekend’s Alumni Meet, the team will travel to Worcester, Mass. to compete against Holy Cross on November 1 at 1 p.m.

 

The Fairfield University women’s swimming & diving team fell to Fordham University this evening at the RecPlex Pool. The women fell 180-115 to the Rams.

Rookie Sierra Weiner (Centerport, N.Y.) posted three individual victories and broke two program records. Weiner captured the 100m butterfly with a time of 1:05.72, breaking her own program record of 1:06.28 previously set on October 18, 2014. In the 400m IM, she earned first place points with a time of 5:07.38, breaking the previous program record of 5:10.12 set by Brittany Hunter on January 16, 2004. Weiner also posted a winning time of 2:09.11 in the 200m freestyle, for a personal best.

Senior Meredith LaBerge (Newtown, Pa.) clocked in third in the 800m freestyle with a time of 9:37.11. LaBerge also placed third in the 400m freestyle with a time of 4:40.66. Junior Kelly Mulligan (Bellerose, N.Y.) posted a third place finish in the 200m backstroke (2:30.44) and a fourth place finish in the 100m backstroke (1:10.32).

Sophomore Meghan Guinee (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) placed third in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:21.21 while junior Callie Vacchiano (Huntington, N.Y.) finished closely behind in fourth (1:21.39). Vacchiano also placed third in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:52.93, for a personal best, and earned second place points in the 400m IM with a time of 5:34.89.

The 200m freestyle relay of Liz Avery (Hampden, Mass.), Michelle Pleban (Seymour, Conn.), Mulligan, and Brianna Thompson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) earned first place points with a time of 1:55.91 while the relay team of Katherine Kraus (Glendale, N.Y.), LaBerge, Alyssa Acompora (West Islip, N.Y.) and Meghan Weiser (Yardley, Pa.) earned second place points with a time of 2:02.30.

Senior Ashlee Steinberger (Haddonfield, N.J.) captured both boards, posting a 1-meter score of 241.80 and making a 3-meter mark of 249.08. Classmate Lauren Kemple (Walpole, Mass.) placed third on the 1-meter event, scoring a 193.73, while sophomore Caroline Gailius (Milton, Mass.) followed in fourth with a 187.28. On the 3-meter board, Leah Pawelczyk (Berlin, Conn.) took third (189.75) while Kemple followed in fifth (180.60).

The Fairfield women’s (1-1) team will continue its home stand. The swimming & diving team will return to the RecPlex Pool on Saturday, October 25 for an Alumni Meet. After this weekend’s Alumni Meet, the team will travel to Worcester, Mass. to compete against Holy Cross on November 1 at 1p.m.
