The Richmond swimming and diving program won for the second-straight day, defeating George Mason 163-134 in day two of the Richmond Duals, held on campus and at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center. After winning Friday over Davidson Friday, the Spiders came away with two wins over Atlantic 10 Conference programs over the two-day meet.
Sophomore Maggie Pope (Nashville, Tennessee) got the first individual win of the day, coming in at 58.51 in the 100 Back in event six of the morning.
Freshman Erin Barry (Millington, New Jersey) won her first individual event of the day and third of the weekend by swimming a 1:06.77 in the 100 Breast.
Junior Melissa Ross (Warrington, Pennsylvania) won the 200 Fly a few events later, with senior teammate Allison Titley (Richmond, Virginia / St. Gertrude) swimming third for points for the Spiders.
The Spiders grabbed second-place points in the 50 Free by freshman Hailey Bivens (Roanoke, Virginia / Cave Spring HS) 200 Back (Pope) and the 500 Free, by Annie Lane (Vinton, Virginia / William Byrd).
Barry won again, posting the fastest time of the day in the 200 Breast, with sophomore teammate Erin Dunstan (New Caanan, Connecticut) winning third-place points.
Bivens broke through for an individual win in the 100 Free, with junior teammate Kelley Yang (Ellicott City, Maryland) scoring third-place points.
Before the second break in the meet, senior Anna Fetter (Westfield, New Jersey) posted a 57.16 for a win in the 100 Fly, with Ross posting third in that event, about a second and a half behind.
In the final individual event of the afternoon, senior Meredith Gouger (Cockeysville, Maryland) was third in the 400 IM.
While the swimming was ongoing, the divers competed on campus, with the Spiders sweeping that day in both the 1m and 3m boards.
Sophomore Irina Chiulli Westwood, Massachusetts), freshman Laura Rokop (Carmel, Indiana) and sophomore Mikeala Gekas-Robinson finished 1-2-3 in the 1m board, while the order in the 3m started with Rokop, then Chiulli with Gekas-Robinson rounding out the scoring for the Spiders.
Richmond will compete in a dual meet next on Halloween at Liberty, starting at 4 p.m.
The Davidson women earned their first Atlantic 10 victory with a 160-101 decision over Duquesne, while George Mason held off the Davidson men, 229-179, in swimming & diving action Saturday on the final day of the Richmond Shootout at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center.
Freshmen Elizabeth Weldon (10:38.78) and Leah Hubert (10:40.64) gave an indication of what was to come in the women’s meet, claiming the first two events in the 1000-yard freestyle to open the meet. Kate Moreton, Katy Williams, Elise Lankiewicz and Kassie Shannon then teamed up to win the 400 medley relay in 3:54.62, and Meredith Nakano (1:55.04) and Kate Carter (1:57.67) claimed the top two spots in the 200 freestyle.
Duquesne earned its first top individual placing in the 100 backstroke, but reigning A-10 Performer of the Week Lauren Malachowski (59.80), Angie Healy (59.93) and Kate Moreton (1:00.55) finished second, third and fourth, respectively. Williams (1:07.39) and Sarah Coats (1:07.81) then earned another 1-2 finish in the 100 breaststroke.
Shannon (24.26) led a Wildcat sweep of the top four places in the 50-yard freestyle. She was followed by Lankiewicz (24.36) and Erica Clancy (24.41) in scoring positions, while Nakano touched fourth in 24.51.
Lankiewicz then earned a victory in the 200 back, touching in 2:06.96. Duquesne claimed the top spot for just the third time in the 200 breaststroke, but again, the ‘Cats claimed the next three spots with Nakano (2:23.26), Williams (2:25.13) and Coats (2:27.33) touching in order.
Shannon earned her second win of the day in the 100 free, touching the wall in 53.05 seconds, while ‘Cats claimed third, fourth and fifth, as well.
Weldon led a podium sweep in the 500 free, finishing in 5:12.59. She was pursued by Anna Blair Bullock (5:14.41) and Kate Carter (5:16.15). The ‘Cats concluded the meet with a Lankiewicz victory in the 100 butterfly and another win in the 200 free relay.
Luke Burton led the men with wins in the 50 backstroke (23.73) and the 200 back (50.33). He also opened the meet by contributing to winning 400 medley relay effort (3:26.78).
Additionally, the ‘Cats took four of the top five spots in the 50 breaststroke, with Grant Smith touching first in 26.70 seconds, while Drew (27.24) and Spencer Gill (27.41) were third and fourth, respectively. Spencer led the same feat in the 100 breast, as he touched first in 59.05 seconds, while Riley League (59.71) and Drew Gill (59.72) followed in the scoring positions. Max Feinstein took second in the 3-meter dive (198.10), while Clay Resweber also earned a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle (4:42.70).
Davidson returns to action next Saturday with its first home meet of the season, hosting former CCSA foe College of Charleston at 1 p.m.
