USC Men Beat Cal Poly

The USC men’s swimming team cruised up Highway 101 today to open its 2014-15 season with a 152-125 win over Pac-12 foe Cal Poly on Friday night (Oct. 17).

The Trojans got scoring from a variety of sources, though a strong group of freshmen and sophomores did much of the damage as Troy got its feet wet in a competition pool for the first time this fall.

USC opened with a win in the 400y medley relay as freshman Ralf Tribuntsov, juniors Morten Klarskov and Maclin Davis and sophomore Santo Condorelli won in 3:18:12.

Freshman Pawel Furtek won the 1000y free in 9:15.00, an early season swim two seconds away from being third best on the team last year. Sophomore Reed Malone was second in 9:34.15.

Seniors Chad Bobrosky (1:41.80) and Cary Wright (1:41.99) went 1-2 in the 200y free and Tribuntsov (49.49, 1.00 off a ‘B’ cut) and fellow freshman Jonathan Knox (51.75) went 1-2 in the 100y back.

Klarskov (56.99) and senior Andrew Malone (57.66) went 2-3 in the 100y breast before sophomore Michael Domagala won the 200y fly in 1:52.02. Domagala later finished first in the 200y IM (1:52.18).

USC swept the sprints as Condorelli (20.48) and sophomore David Morgan (21.10) finished 1-2 in the 50y free and Reed Malone next claimed the 100y free (46.29).

Wright (1:49.37) and senior Luca Spinazzola (1:51.29) went 1-2 in the 200y back while sophomore Steven Stumph (2:04.75) and junior Ridge Altman (2:05.18) did the same in the 200y breast.

Furtek doubled up with a win in the 500y free (4:32.53) while junior Ted Singley was second (4:36.42) and sophomore Dylan Carter took third (4:37.51). Singley was USC’s top finisher in the 100y fly, taking third (53.87).

USC closed the meet by touching first in the 200y free as Condorelli, Morgan, Carter and Davis clocked a 1:21.67.

The Trojans will next drive south and take on another Pac-12 swimming rival, UC Santa Barbara, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
