Tampa Edged by Florida Southern

A pair of Sunshine State Conference powerhouse programs met under the lights in the 2014-15 men's and women's swimming opener as host University of Tampa fell to Florida Southern College.

In the men's meet, the Mocs won by the slim margin of 134-128. The FSC women also came out ahead of the Spartans, accumulating a 157.5 to 104.5 victory.

Tampa's men began the meet with a first-place 200 Medley Relay race. Jordan Augier, Wayne Denswil, Khalid Aldaboos and Martin Hammer comprised the top team with a time of 1:33.94.

Denswil also won the 100 Breast (58.88) and 200 IM (1:54.74) in the freshman's first collegiate meet. Edward Williams was second in the 100 Breast at 59.32, while Clayton Clemens made it a UT sweep with a third-place effort of 1:00.01.

Aldaboos championed a pair of races, winning both the 50 Free (21.20) and 100 Fly (51.25). Runar Borgen won the 100 Free with a time of 47.10.

The Spartan men won its second relay race of the night with a first-place effort in the 200 Free Relay. Aldaboos, Hammer, Augier and Jeremy Parker had a time of 1:24.22 to win the final race of the evening.

UT's women took the top three spots in the 200 Fly, led by a first-place effort by Sophie Long (2:11.51). Charissa Venice (2:13.69) and Paige Dunham (2:14.14) were second and third respectively.

The Spartans also took all three spots in the 100 Fly, with Long claiming her second first-place effort of the day. The freshman from Cleethorpes, England was clocked at 59.19. Emily Grams (59.70) and Dunham (1:01.40) followed to make up the top three.

Long finished the evening with three first-place performances in her collegiate debut as she won the 200 IM. Her time was 2:10.78.

UT finished women's action with a first-place time in the 200 Free Relay. The team of Erin Plachy, Marisa Barton, Noel Styer and Grams logged a 1:37.67 effort.

The Spartans are back in action on November 15 versus SSC opponent Saint Leo. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Fans may watch the event on TampaSpartans.tv.
