Davidson Falls at East Carolina

Lauren Malachowski earned Davidson’s lone event win as the East Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated the Wildcats’ by scores of 184-105 and 188-104, respectively, Saturday afternoon in Minges Natatorium.

Malachowski won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.22 seconds and also took fifth in the 100 free in 54.32.

Elise Lankiewicz was also a top performer, as she was second in the 200 free (1:52.21) and 500 free (5:06.92), and also took fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:08.15. Additionally, Kassie Shannon second in the 100 free in 53.61 seconds after taking third in the 50 free in 24.64 seconds.

Karen Monuszko led the women in the 1-meter dive with a third placing with 208.58 points. Megan Cypcar earned a point in fifth with 196.43 points, and led the ‘Cats in the 3-meter, placing fourth with 218.85 points.

The men turned in a strong relay performance early on, as Luke Burton, Spencer Gill, Cameron Bard, and Brandon Kegley took second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:35.95, getting edged for the victory by just over a second by ECU (1:34.88).

The men’s team’s strongest individual showing came in the 1000 freestyle, as freshman Clay Resweber placed second in 9:49.64 and was joined by three teammates in the top five. Max Schimanski took fourth in 9:55.95, and Dylan Ludwick was fifth in 10:01.36. Resweber was also a top performer in the 500 free (4:49.93).

Other strong showings included Burton, who placed third in the 100 back in 52.88 and turned in the third best time in the 200 backstroke. Cole Riggan was third in the 200 free in 1:45.19. Grant Smith was a leading performer for the ‘Cats in the 200 individual medley (1:58.44) and 200 breaststroke (2:12.72), and was also fifth in 1:45.36 in the 200 freestyle. Bard took third in the 50 free in 21.88 and was Davidson’s top performer in the 100 butterfly (53.41). Spencer and Drew Gill placed third (1:00.09) and fourth (1:00.92), respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.

Davidson will get its first look at A-10 competition next weekend at the Richmond Duals, facing the host Spiders, Duquesne and George Mason Friday-Saturday.
