North Carolina Sweeps Tennessee

The University of North Carolina opened its 2014-15 dual meet swimming and diving schedule in impressive fashion, sweeping Southeastern Conference power Tennessee at Koury Natatorium.  The Carolina men posted a 170-130 victory over the Volunteers and the Tar Heel women prevailed by a score of 204-96.

“We’re extremely happy about the outcome.  We’ve been working to get Tennessee back on our schedule.  We used to swim Tennessee home and away on a regular basis and it was good rivalry.  They have an outstanding program,” said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm.

“I was very happy with our team today.  They had great spirit and enthusiasm,” said DeSelm.  “What I told them at the beginning of the week is train all week for the end of the season and when Friday comes that’s most important thing we’re doing that day.  I’m thrilled we had some great performances both in the pool and on the boards.”

Carolina’s women’s divers turned in stellar performances for the opening meet of the campaign as UNC’s school records on both boards fell.  Freshman Elissa Dawson won the one-meter diving with a score of 320.40, eclipsing the previous University mark of 305.20 set in 2011 by Jenna Moore.  In three-meter diving, UNC’s Michole Timm, a redshirt junior, scored 352.35 points.  She also broke a record set by Moore at 331.45 in 2011.

Carolina swimmers posted 13 NCAA “B” standard qualifying times on the day.  Sophomore Hellen Moffitt captured the 100-yard backstroke at 53.49, the 200-yard backstroke in 1:57.79 and the 100-yard butterfly in 53.73, all “B’ qualifying standards.  She also led off UNC’s winning 200-yard medley relay.  Moffitt was the only three-event individual winner for Carolina as the women had a balanced effort, winning 10 individual events and both relays.

Danielle Siverling, senior co-captain, won a pair of individual events and also swam on the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay. Siverling’s individual wins came in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.70) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.50).  Juniors Hannah Lincoln and Ally Hardesty swam on both winning relays for Carolina.

On the men’s side, UNC won seven individual events and one relay and utilized its depth to pull away for a 40-point win.  The difference in the meet proved to be Carolina’s knack to consistently pick up second and third place finishes.

Logan Heck and Ben Colley were outstanding on the men’s side as they both grabbed two individual wins and swam on the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay.  Heck was the first-place finisher in the two sprint freestyle events while Colley blistered the field in both butterfly events.  The junior was well under the NCAA “B” qualifying times at 100 yards (47.54) and 200 yards (1:45.67).  In the 200-yard butterfly, three UNC swimmers had NCAA “B” times – Colley, junior co-captain Mitch DeForest and Dom Glavich.

Carolina will next be in action against another excellent team from the Southeastern Conference, hosting Georgia at 5 p.m. next Friday in Koury Natatorium.
