Delaware Sweeps Georgetown, St. Francis (Pa.)

The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving team started out the 2014-15 campaign on the right foot Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens swept a tri-meet with Georgetown and St. Francis (Pa.) at Rawstrom Natatorium.

The Delaware men (1-0), who defeated the Hoyas 176-117, had 11 swimmers win races, including victories from freshmen Nicholas Badsky, Patrick Savidge, and Thomas Scott.

“I was really happy with how the freshmen competed today,” said University of Delaware head coach John Hayman. “This being their first race, they did not need any extra motivation, but I wanted them to focus on competing and racing instead of worrying about what their times were.”

Senior captain Timothy Ware and Badsky led the Blue Hens with three race victories each to pace UD to it second straight season-opening win over Georgetown.

The Delaware women (2-0) were able to defeat both opponents Saturday, downing Georgetown by a score of 160-135 and besting St. Francis (Pa.) by a final margin of 194-95.

“We really swam well across the board,” said Hayman who is in his 25th season at Delaware. “There were a lot of races where it was really tight and it felt like we were able to touch first in all of them.”

Alyssa Sanders led the UD women with three first place finishes in the 200 medley relay (1:48.09), 100 backstroke (58.11), and 200 backstroke (2:07.14)

The Blue Hens will return to action Oct. 25 when both teams travel to Virginia to take on former Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason at 1 p.m. In Fairfax, Va.
