Utah in First at Intermountain Shootout

With day one behind them, University of Utah women’s swimming and diving sits in first at the Intermountain Shootout with a score of 141 with the men also in first with a score of 136.

“We had great effort today and some very strong early season performances. Hopefully we can clean up a lot of technical mistakes as we move into the second half of the meet tomorrow morning,” said Utah head coach Joe Dykstra about the first day of competition. 

For the women, there were eight first place finishes. Taking first in the 200 medley relay was team of Megan Kawaguchi, Stina Colleou, Petra Soininen and Giuliana Gigliotti with a time of 1:45.24. Team of Shayla Archer, Brianna Francis, Melissa Paakh and Rhianna Williams took second in the event (1:47.27.)

In the 200 free, Amanda Barrett touched in first with a time of 1:54. 92 with Dorien Butter in 3rd (1:55.24), Maddie Meisel in 4th (1:55.71), Kat Wickham in 5th (1:57.47) and Maryssa McArthur took sixth in the event (1:57.49). 

Taking first in the 400 IM was Isabella Kearns who touched in with a time of 4:33.19 with Kylie Boyce trailing in second (4:34.64). 

It went one, two, three in the 100 breast with Stina Colleou taking first (1:04.07), Brianna Francis in second (1:05.76) and Jenna Marsh in third (1:08.02). 

Gigliotti took first in the 50 free with a time of 24.18 with Williams in second (24.30) and Butter in third (24.41). 

In the 100 back, Kawaguchi touched in first with a time of 56.98. Also in the event was Barrett in third (57.75) and Pabst in fourth (58.05). 

Paahk took first in the 50 fly with a time of 25.90 with Soininen in second (26.09). In the 1650 free, Wickham also took first with a time of 17:38.89. 

In diving, Amanda Casillas took first in one-meter dives with a score of 262.30 with Jasmine Matkovic in second (226.85). 

The Ute men also took eight wins for the day. In the 200 medley relay, teaming up for first was Brandon Deckard, Jack Burton, Alex Fernandes and Nick Soedel with a time of 1:30.32.

Bence Kiraly took first in the 200 yard free with a time of 1:40.20 with Andy Cunningham taking fourth (1:43.32) and Pete Kotson in fifth (1:44.32). Kiraly also took first in the 1650 free with a time of 15:50.95) with Jay Bollinger taking second in the event (16.04.48). 

In the 400 IM, Deckard claimed the top spot with a time of 4:00.28. Also in the event was third place Kron with a time of 4:02.77.

Soedel touched in first in the 50 free (19.94) with Alex Fernandes taking second (20.82). Fernandes then took first in the 50 fly with a time of 22.21.

Jack Burton touched in third in the 100 breast with a time of 57.49. In the 100 back, Deckard took fourth (51.94) with Ben Scott in fifth (52.20). 

In diving, Jacob Crayne took first with a score of 320.35.

The Utes continue competition tomorrow with finals beginning at 5 p.m.
