Show-Me Showdown - Day 1

Missouri State

The Missouri State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed and each finished third at the Missouri Show-Me Showdown Friday, Oct. 3, at the Mizzou Aquatics Center

The men finished with a combined score of 366 points, while Missouri won the Showdown with 696 and Drury followed with 429. The women completed the Showdown with 366.50 points, also ending up behind Missouri (684) and Drury (436).

“The early season meets provide us with a great opportunity to evaluate our athletes and make adjustments that will lead to success in the coming meets,” head coach Dave Collins said. “We have a very busy October with lots of opportunities for improvement.”

Senior Paul Le won two events for the Bears’ men’s side, swimming top times in the 100 back (48.89) and the 200 IM (1:48.47). Junior Miguel Davila earned a runner-up time in the 500 free, finishing the event in 4:34.80.

Junior Dora Kiss meanwhile had two of the top performances on the women’s side, finishing fourth in the 200 free in a time of 1:55.28 and third in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.29.

Other returning notables include sophomore Lauren Pavel who finished fifth in the 100 breast (1:06.78) and ninth in 200 IM (2:12.16). Junior Uvis Kalnins placed third in the 100 fly and 200 free, while Matthew Wilson placed sixth in the 100 fly in a time of 50.65.

The Bears used a heavy contingent of freshmen in their lineup and many of them highlighted MSU performances.

“It’s always a fun experience to see the freshmen compete in their first college meet,” Collins said. “This group did a good job managing nerves and taking feedback positively.”

Men’s freshman diver Brody Arvesen placed in the top-8 in both diving events, taking a team-best second in the 1-meter event with 320.80 points and seventh in 3-meter diving (220.40).

Women’s divers Melissa Maynard and Hannah Swyers each had top-10 performances, with Maynard finishing third in 1-meter diving (234.05) and Swyers eighth in 3-meter diving (223.10).

Freshmen Sydney Zupan and Hanna Flanagan each had noteworthy debuts for the Bears, with Zupan placing in the top-10 in the 200 free (1:55.97) and sixth in the 100 back (59.18). Flanagan swam the 100 fly in 59.62 seconds to finish seventh.

The Bears begin their dual season when they head to Evansville to take on the Purple Aces at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, and also face Southern Illinois in a dual the following day at 11 a.m.

 

Washington U./St. Louis

The Washington University in St. Louis men's and women's swimming & diving teams each finished sixth in the team standings at the Show-Me Showdown hosted by the University of Missouri Friday evening.

The Washington University women scored 208 points to finish sixth behind five NCAA Division I and II teams, led by team champion Missouri who scored 696 points. Missouri also won the men's team title with 684 points, while the Washington U. men scored 204.5 to place sixth overall.

Freshman Niamh O'Grady posted the highest finish of the day for the Washington University women's team, placing fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.18. O'Grady also teamed with freshman Fiona Hon and sophomores MariMac Collins and Claire Savage to take fifth in the 200-freestyle relay in 1:39.66. Senior Sara Taege, sophomores Lindsey Siegel and Lauren Carlos and junior Katie Anderson finished ninth in the event with a time of 1:40.75.

The 200-free relay team of sophomore Justin Morrell, junior Reed Dalton, freshman Ross Brown and junior Kaisen Yao had the highest finish of the meet for the Washington U. men, clocking a time of 1:25.69 to place fourth overall. Yao, Dalton, Morrell and sophomore Michael Lagieski added a seventh-place showing in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:34.27. The Washington U. men added a ninth-place finish in the 400-free relay when the team of junior RJ Petrella, Brown, Lagieski and sophomore Reese Frerichs clocked a time of 3:13.68.

Morrell added an eighth-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 21.12, while Dalton was seventh in the 100 butterfly in 51.04. Lagieski also posted a ninth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in a season-best time of 57.59. Sophomore Andrew Ellison was the only other men's swimmer to post a top-10 finish, placing seventh in the 500 free in a season-best time of 4:44.52.

The Washington U. women added two more top-10 relay finishes at the meet. Taege, Collins, junior Toireasa Rafferty-Millett and freshman Nicole Zanolli finish the 400-free relay in 3:38.98 to finish seventh overall. O'Grady, freshman Devon Litteral, Carlos and Savage added a 10th-place finish in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:51.14.

The Washington University men's and women's swimming & diving teams return to action with a dual meet at DePauw University Saturday, Nov. 1. That meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (ET) in Greencastle, Ind.
