All-UNC Invite - Day 1

Catawba

Catawba College opened its 2014-15 swim season on Friday at the All-NC Invitational being held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Catawba men sit sixth among 10 teams after day one of the two-day meet. The Catawba Indian women are seventh out of 13 teams competing.

The women kicked things off in the 200 free relay and placed 10th, swimming the fourth best time in school history at 1:40.64. The team was made up of Amy Cujas, Janin Kassner, Katia Kruglov  and Nadine Brockmann. The men's team of Toomas Goutt, Jevgenij Gamper, Dominik Brus and Theo Zatterstrom was sixth in a time of 1:25.66.

In the 500 free, Anna Barnes placed 19th with a time of 5:21.33 for the women. The men got a 12th place finish from Zatterstrom (4:48.20) and a 15th place in a time of 4:50.03 from Andrew McCollister.

Brockmann went 22nd in the 200 IM (2:16.95), while Gamper was 10th (1:57.69) and Finn Furstenwerth 19th (2:02.01) for the men. Cujas had swim of 25.24 in the 50 free to finish 19th and Goutt was 10th in a time of 21.52.

The first day closed with the 400 medley relays. Catawba's women were 14th in a time of 4:08.39 with the men's A team being disqualified. The B team placed 20th (3:47.83).

The meet will resume at the Aquatic Center at 10 am on Saturday morning with another session following in the afternoon at 5 pm.

 

Davidson

The Davidson men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams both sit third after the first session of competition in the season-opening All-NC Invitational, hosted by NC State in the Greensboro Aquatics Center Friday evening.
 
Sophomore Elise Lankiewicz posted the top Davidson finish, taking third behind a pair of NC State swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:59.20, while freshman Elizabeth Weldon rounded out the Top 10 in the event in her debut in 5:11.34.
 
The Wildcat women earned two additional top-five finishes, as Karen Monuszko led three Davidson divers in the 1-meter dive with a fifth-place finish, scoring 207.68, and Erica Clancy, Meredith Nakano, Kassie Shannon and Angie Healy teamed up in the 200-yard freestyle relay to place fifth in 1:37.97.
 
Shannon then paced Davidson in the 50 free, touching the wall in 24.68 seconds to place ninth. Four ‘Cats placed in the Top 15, as Clancy (24.80), Lauren Malachowski (24.82) and Healy (24.88) placed 13th, 14th and 15th, respectively.
 
The women’s session concluded with the 400-yard medley relay, which Healy, Katy Williams, Lankiewicz and Nakano led with a seventh-place finish in 3:58.20.
 
The Wildcat men saw their top finishes come in the relays, as Cameron Bard, Ari Snyder, Brandon Kegley and Luke Burton opened the session with a fifth-place finish in the 200 free in 1:25.32. Burton, Spencer Gill, Bard and Kegley then concluded the session with a sixth-place finish in 3:30.30 to lead the ‘Cats in the 400 medley.
 
In between, three earned top-10 finishes in the 500-yard freestyle, led by Dylan Ludwick in seventh in 4:44.04. He was followed by a pair of freshmen in eighth and ninth, respectively: Clay Resweber (4:45.66) and Cole Riggan (4:45.95).
 
Grant Smith paced the men in the 200 individual medley with an eighth-place finish in 1:55.93. Bard also earned an eighth placing, doing so in the 50 free in 21.30 seconds. Burton followed in 12th in 21.74.
 
“We swam well tonight,” said head coach John Young. “We had some great debuts by freshmen and some solid performances relative to this point in the season last year, so overall it was a good session.  Hopefully we have two more.”
 
The meet will conclude with two more sessions Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
 
NC State and East Carolina currently rank first and second, respectively, in both the men’s and women’s standings. The host Wolfpack accrued 557 points on the men’s side and and 524 on the women’s, while East Carolina totaled 487 and 499, respectively. Davidson trails with 382 points for the men and 404 or the women. Fourth-place Gardner-Webb was the only other school to surpass 300 points, totaling 315 on the men’s side and 340 on the women’s.

 

N.C. State

The NC State swimming & diving team opened its season opened its 2014-15 season Friday evening inside the Greensboro Aquatic Center on the first day of competition at the All-North Carolina Invitational. 

After day one of competition, the Pack is in first-place overall in the men's and women's competition. The Wolfpack women finished the day with 524 points followed by East Carolina (499), Davidson (404), Gardner-Webb (340) and Campbell (285). The NC State men completed the day with 557 points followed by ECU (487), Davidson (382), Gardner-Webb (315) and St. Andrew's (252). 

Overall, the Wolfpack took first-place honors in 11 of 12 events contested. The squad recorded four relay victories and saw five different student-athletes capture wins in the evening.

Holloway’s Breakdown
"I'm pretty pleased with how today went," said head coach Braden Holloway. "I'm never sure what we're going to get in this meet. I think overall we were better than last year. It was a good start.

"It was great having Rachel Mumma back after redshirting last season. She added some new dives and had a personal-best tonight and just missed setting the school record. Our team was glad to have her back and it was nice to see that support they gave her.

"Derek Hren is on a different level mentally than he was a year ago. He came in confident this season and he has been a nice surprise for us."

Wolfpack Relays
- NC State opened the meet by taking first and second in the women’s 200 freestyle relay. The team of Lauren Poli, Natalie Labonge, Alexia Zevnik and Lauren Rhodes touched the wall in 1:32.98 and just 0.02 seconds ahead of the quartet of Lotta Nevalainen, Riki Bonnema, Ashlyn Koletic and Krista Duffield who recorded a time of 1:33.00.
- The Wolfpack men also posted first and second place performances in the men’s 200 freestyle relay. The ‘A’ relay team of Scott Johnson, Soren Dahl, Simonas Bilis and freshman Ryan Held combined to swim a time of 1:20.96 in the event.            
- The women's 400 medley relay saw the Wolfpack claim first and second-place honors. The quartet of Zevnik, Payton Schrum, Koletic and Nevalainen won the event with a time of 3:47.10.  - The night concluded with the men's 400 medley relay also claiming first and second-place honors. The team of Jacob Siar, Derek Hren, John Newell and Bilis posted a time of 3:18.00 to claim first-place honors. 

Distance Notables
- Rachel Muller earned a victory in the women’s 500 freestyle in a time of 4:54.72, while Kristin Connors won her heat and finished second overall with a time of 4:57.07.
- NC State took first, second and third-place in the men’s 500 freestyle with Adam Linker leading the way with a time of 4:31.57. Matt O’Donnell [4:31.57] finished second overall, while Alexander Hamilton [4:39.09} touched the wall in third-place.    

IM Breakdown
- Freshman Anton Ipsen won his first collegiate event in the men’s 200 individual medley. Ipsen finished with a time of 1:51.38 to edge teammate Derek Hren, who touched the wall in 1:51.89
- Rhodes posted the best time on the squad in the women’s 200 IM with a mark of 2:07.34 to finish second overall.

Wolfpack Sprints
- The Wolfpack women’s squad finished first, second, third and fourth in the 50 freestyle. Bonnema led the group with a time of 20.92, while Poli clocked a 23.05. Zevnik touched the wall in third with a time of 24.00 and Duffield clocked a 24.12.
- The men’s squad posted a first, second and third-place finish in the 50 free, as Andreas Schiellerup finished with a time of 20.46. Johnson finished with a 20.71 clocking, while Jason Deana [20.81] finished third.

Diving Notables
- In her return to action after redshirting the entire 2013-14 season, Rachel Mumma finished first overall on the women’s one-meter springboard with a score of 323.93.
- On the men’s three-meter board, Grant Saale finished first overall with a final tally of 336.75, while freshman Charles Mitchell finished third with a 279.90.

Up Next
The Pack will return to the pool on Saturday for the final day of competition at the All-North Carolina Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., from the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
