West Florida

The No. 13 West Florida women’s swimming and diving team finished the Wingate Fall Frenzy on the high note on Sunday, as the Argonauts totaled 10 NCAA B-cut times and set four new school records. UWF placed second out of 14 teams at the event, defeating No. 3 Wingate and No. 21 Carson-Newman, as well as several Division I opponents.

No. 2 Queens (N.C.) was the overall winner with 1461 points, and UWF came in second with 1052.5. Division I competitors Gardner-Webb (999) and College of Charleston (864.5) finished third and fourth, respectively, while Wingate finished fifth (755).

“Our program took a big step forward this weekend as we competed against and defeated several excellent Division II programs and a number of strong Division I teams,” said UWF head coach Andrew Hancock. “Throughout the weekend our team showed determination and the spirit that defines UWF. It was a pleasure to see our hard work pay off.”

The 1,650 Freestyle was a highlight for UWF in multiple ways. Madeline Pitt (Trussville, Ala.) finished fourth and Angelina Gallastegui (Brandon, Fla.) finished sixth. Pitt’s time of 17:18.59 broke her own school record, and it marked an NCAA B-cut as well. Gallastegui finished with a B-cut time of 17:26.16. The duo also finished the first 1,000 yards fast enough to earn B-cuts at that distance; Pitt’s split of 10:28.30 set a new school record in the 1,000 Free, and Gallastegui was right behind at 10:31.99.

Nicole Machado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) set a new school record in the 200 Backstroke with an NCAA B-cut time of 2:03.26, and she finished fifth in the event. She now owns the program records in both backstroke events.

The 100 Freestyle was highlighted by Peggy de Villiers (Somerset West, South Africa) and Danica Burnett (Perth, Australia), as both swam NCAA B-cut times. Finishing in third place was de Villiers, and her time of 50.81 broke her own school record. Burnett placed 12th at 52.53, and her time marked a new UWF freshman record.

Teammates Paulina Szydlo (Wroclaw, Poland) and Anna-Marie Macht (Markkleeberg, Germany) faced off in the 200 Breaststroke. Szydlo finished second at 2:19.57, barely out-touching Macht at 2:19.59. Both times were NCAA B-cuts. Gabrielle Spangenberg (Chuluota, Fla.) also competed in the event, finishing eighth with a new UWF freshman record time of 2:25.38.

The final event of the day was the 400 Freestyle Relay, and UWF’s A-team finished fourth with a B-cut time of 3:30.47. The team included Burnett, de Villiers, Mariana de Paula (Santos, Brazil) and Macht.

The three-day event was historic for the second-year program, as six new school records were set, five of them by freshmen. The freshman class had an especially impressive weekend, as all but two UWF freshman records were broken in the swimming events.

The Argonauts will return to action after the holiday break at home on Jan. 3 against Ouachita Baptist.
