Wingate Fall Frenzy - Day 2

Wingate

The Wingate University women's swimming team is fifth and the Bulldog men's swimming team is sixth after the second day of the Fall Frenzy Invitational at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in downtown Charlotte Saturday. Fourteen schools are competing in this year's event.

WINGATE WOMEN

Wingate sophomore Sofia Petrenko (Arkhangelsk, Russia) finished third in the 400 Individual Medley with a bronze medal time of 4:26.67. She swam the first leg on Wingate's sixth-place 800 Freestyle Relay team (7:44.26). Petrenko was joined by sophomore Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia), junior Ana Fish (Carthage, N.C.) and freshman Leigh-Ann Clark (Newport News, Va.).

Arkhipova was fifth in the 100 Backstroke (57.74), while Clark won the 200 Freestyle "C" Final (1:54.90). Bulldog junior Armony Dumur (Amiens, France) was fifth in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 56.41. WU redshirt sophomore Olga Kosheleva (Yekaterinburg, Russia) won the 100 Breaststroke "B" Final with a time of 1:06.40.

Queens University of Charlotte leads the women's competition with 1021 points. The Royals are followed in the top 10 by West Florida (695.5), Gardner-Webb (688), College of Charleston (608), Wingate (538), Georgia Southern (524), Limestone (487), Carson-Newman (406), UNC Asheville (349) and Pfeiffer (203.5).

WINGATE MEN

Wingate freshman Jerome Heidrich (Hamburg, Germany) was fifth in the 200 Freestyle with his time of 1:41.28. In the evening's last event, Heidrich swam the second portion on Wingate's third-place 800 Freestyle Relay quartet (6:49.96). His relay mates include sophomore Leif-Henning Klüver (Risum-Lindholm, Germany), junior Ossian Arvidsson (Kungälv, Sweden) and senior Issam Zeraidi (Brussels, Belgium).

Klüver won the 100 Backstroke "C" Final with a time of 51.99. Arvidsson and sophomore Øystein Fjeldberg (Oslo, Norway) were seventh (4:09.16) and eighth (4:11.55), respectively, in the 400 Individual Medley.

Queens University of Charlotte leads the men's competition with 1007 points. Limestone is second with 930 points. The remainder of the top 10 men's teams includes College of Charleston (844), Gardner-Webb (537), Carson-Newman (526), Wingate (466), Pfeiffer (359), Catawba (324), St. Andrews (295) and Mars Hill (260).

 

Catawba

Catawba swimmers set two school records and earned three finals swims Saturday on the second day at the Wingate Fall Frenzy at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. School record swims went to Nadine Brockmann (Hamburg, GERMANY/Ossietzsky) in the 200 free and Jevgenij Gamper (Vilnius, LITHUANIA/Kachialov) in his opening 50 of the 100 breast.

Brockmann posted a sixth-place finish in the 200 free with her time of 1:54.03. She came back to lower the record with a leadoff 200 free leg in the 800 free relay, clocking in at 1:53.21. Gamper won the B final of the 100 breast in a time of 56.43 which was fourth fastest in school history. His first 50 was in a time of 25.79, just over a tenth better than Patrik Drakes' mark of 25.90.

In addition to Brockmann's final swim, Andrew McCollister (Rockwell, N.C./Salisbury HS) and Toomas Goutt (Saint Witz, FRANCE/de Vinci) posted sixth-place finishes for the men. McColllister had a time of 4.07.81 in the 400 IM which was 10th fastest in school history. Goutt's time of 1:41.58 in the 200 free was the eighth best time in the record books.

Dominik Brus (Krakow, POLAND/Loms Krakow) swam to a B final win in the 100 back, posting a time of 51.08. Janin Kassner (Giesen, GERMANY/Andreanum) had a B final swim in the 100 breast for the women and finished 11th. Her time of 1:06.83 was the fifth best time in school history.

Brockmann's record leg in the 800 free relay helped the team to an 11th place finish and the second fastest time in school history at 7:50.61. Joining her on the relay were Paula Garcia (Madrid, SPAIN, IES Diego Velazguez), Amy Cujas (Mocksville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) and Anna Barnes (Suwanee, Ga./N. Gwinett HS/Darton St.). The men's 800 free relay team of Goutt, Gamper, Brus and Theo Zatterstrom (Stockholm, SWEDEN/Fryshuset) placed fifth and swam the fourth fastest time in school history at 6:53.49.

Queens still leads the standings on the both the men's and women's side. The Catawba women are 11th and the men eighth.

 

West Florida

The No. 13 ranked University of West Florida women’s swimming and diving team had a solid day at the Wingate Fall Frenzy and the Emory Diving Fall Invitational on Saturday. The Argonauts currently sit in second place out of 14 teams after the second day at the Wingate Fall Frenzy, and trail only No. 2 ranked Queens (N.C.).
 
West Florida currently leads NCAA Division I opponent Gardner-Webb on the leaderboard.
 
"I’m very proud of the team’s resilience tonight as well as their spirit,” head coach Andrew Hancock said. “The team’s depth with the addition of our new swimmers has us competing with some excellent programs at this meet. Anna and Peggy led by example as they always do, and they were joined by several of our new simmers in showcasing the depth we have which will help us at the conference meet.
 
“We are excited to finish the meet strong tomorrow and continue to make adjustments as we put the pieces together that will help is excel at the end of the season.”
 
Anna-Marie Macht (Markkleeberg, Germany) led the Argonauts on the day with a pair of NCAA B-cut times. Macht finished fourth in the 400-yard IM (4:30.69) and also finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.48).
 
Freshman Nicole Machado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) set a school record in the 100-backstroke (56.87) en route to a NCAA B-cut time.
 
Peggy de Villiers (Somerset West, South Africa) finished ninth in the 100-fly en route to a NCAA B-cut time (56.61).
 
Several freshmen stepped up for UWF today led by Madeline Pitt (Trussville, Ala.) setting a UWF freshman record in the 400 IM prelims (4:33.44). Gabrielle Spangenberg (Chuluota, Fla.) also set a West Florida freshman record in the 100-breastroke en route to a NCAA B-cut time (1:05.25).
 
UWF freshmen Danica Burnett (Perth, Australia/St. Brigids) and Sophia Oliva (Plantation, Fla.) made it into a very competitive final in the 200-free with Oliva’s time good enough for a freshman program record (1:54.69).
 
The West Florida 200-medley recorded the second fastest time in school history en route to a third-place finish, and a NCAA B-cut time (1:45.15). The 200-medley relay team included Machado, Macht, de Villiers and senior Emily Mitchell (Allen Park, Mich.).

The UWF 800-freestyle relay that featured three freshmen also secured a NCAA B-cut time (7:46.60). The 800-freestyle relay team included sophomore Mariana de Paula (Santos, Brazil), and freshmen Maggie Layde (Kennesaw, Ga.), Oliva and Burnett.
                   
The UWF diving team had a strong showing at the Emory Diving Fall Invitational on Saturday in Atlanta, Ga. Junior Josie McKee (Canton, Ohio) qualified for NCAA Championships in the one meter diving event (445.05). UWF sophomore Megan Drake (Navarre, Fla.) scored a personal best in the one meter dive (295.10) and made her debut in the three meter diving event.
 
"I am really excited with the improvement in our divers from the beginning of the season,” UWF diving coach Barbara Parker said. “Emory is a fun meet, and our divers enjoy the atmosphere."
 
The final day of the Wingate Fall Frenzy will get under way on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. ET.

 

Georgia Southern

The Eagles posted strong times on day two of the Wingate Fall Frenzy Saturday from the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Day two included preliminary rounds in the morning with the finals in the evening for the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 800 free relay.

The Saturday evening finals kicked off with the 200 medley relay.  The Eagles team of Christina Moran, Amber Cortazzo, Megan Heller and Elaina Lanson finished in 5th place with a time of 1:46.43. Gardner-Webb won the finals in 1:42.40

Lauren Campbell posted a strong 5th place showing in the 400 individual medley event touching in 4:33.45.  In total, 32 swimmers competed in the event, and Campbell qualified in the Top-8 through preliminaries thus earning a chance to compete in the A final.

Kylee Parsons, competing in the 200 free A-final, finished in the 5th spot with a time of 1:53.66.  In the 100 back, Moran finished with a time of 58.79 which was strong enough for an 8th place finish in the A-final.

Heller posted a 57.07 in the 100 butterfly which was good enough for 7th place in the A final.  In the B final of the same event, Sarah Schwartz and Cortazzo finished 12th and 13th overall touching in 58.32 and 58.52 respectively.  In total, 71 swimmers competed in the event.

The final day of the Wingate Fall Frenzy will be Sunday and the Eagles will compete in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 400 free relays to close out their fall season.

 

Queens

Queens University of Charlotte men’s swim team ranks first with a score of 1007 in the Wingate Fall Frenzy after the conclusion of Day 2 on Saturday, November 22, 2014. The men would add three additional first place finishes to the line-up in addition to the four the day prior.
 
Nicholas Arakelian took first place in the men’s 400 Yard Individual Medley touching the wall at 3:54.25. Arakelian not only grabbed an NCAA ‘B’ Standard time, he dropped over five seconds off his time to grab a new pool record. 
 
Ben Taylor held off the competition to secure a first place finish, clocking a time of 1:39.20 in the 200 Yard Freestyle. Dropping over a second off his time, Taylor’s swim qualified him under the NCAA ‘B’ Standard mark.
 
Arakelian, Taylor, Josa and Hayden Kosater took the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay by storm harnessing a finish of 6:37.33. Their performance landed them a pool record and an NCAA ‘B’ Standard time.
 
Queens would have two second place finishes for the day as Matt Josa put together a 48.31 time for the 100 Yard Butterfly falling just shy of Buckley Powell from College of Charleston. Both swimmers would surpass the previous record. Niclas Eriksson narrowly missed first in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 54.23 which improving by over a second in the event. 
 
The Wingate Fall Frenzy concludes competition tomorrow as the Royals look to continue their outstanding performance in the meet.

 

After the second day of competition on Saturday, November 22, 2014, Queens University of Charlotte women’s swim team holds first place by 326 points in the Wingate Fall Frenzy. The women’s team collectively scored 1021 points due largely to their nine first place finishes so far in the event.
 
Caroline Arakelian dropping over six seconds off her time, grabbed the first place spot in the 400 Yard Individual Medley. Arakelian clocked a 4:17.31 for the event, out touching the competition by nine seconds and taking a new pool record.
 
The Royals had a one-two finish as Hannah Peiffer topped the women’s 100 Yard Butterfly finishing to the wall in 54.34. She would set a new pool record surpassing her previous record swim from last season. Alexander Marshall powered to the wall after her teammate to secure second place with a time of 55.39. Both Peiffer and Marshall would walk away with NCAA ‘B’ Standard times.
 
Lillian Gordy took first for the Royals in the 200 Yard Freestyle grabbing a pool record. Her time of 1:50.10 was a season best as she out touched her competition. The time would currently rank her atop the NCAA Division II list for the event.
 
Peiffer again graced the top of the competition with a win in the 100 Yard Backstroke. Her time of 55.72 granted her another pool best and an NCAA ‘B’ Standard time for her finish.
 
Arakelian, Lillian Gordy, McKenzie Stevens, and Shane Knight, respectfully, complimented last night’s performance with a win in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay. The dynamic group flew past the competition with over six seconds of separation taking a 7:30.33 meet record in an NCAA ‘B’ Standard performance.
 
The Wingate Fall Frenzy concludes competition tomorrow as the Royals look to continue their outstanding performance in the meet.
