Washington College Splits With Saint Mary's

Visiting Washington College improved to 3-1 on the season by winning nine of 11 events in a 138-66 non-conference men's swimming win over host St. Mary's College of Maryland tonight. The Seahawks slipped to 3-6 with the loss. 

Junior Lucas Morgan (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) won a pair of individual events, taking the 400 individual medley in 4:15.72 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.30. He also swam the breaststroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay, joining junior Charles Logan (Durham, N.C./Riverside), seniorGreg Lee (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial), and junior Brent Longenecker (Maytown, Pa./Donegal) to capture first place in 1:38.93.

The Shoremen also won the 200 freestyle relay as Lee, Longenecker, freshmanCody Weiler (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area), and senior Austin Yocum(Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) finished in 1:30.17. 

Freshman Kevin Mackenzie (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College H.S. [D.C.]) won one individuals event as was second in two others, taking the 100 freestyle in 48.49 and placing second in the 50 freestyle in 22.23 and in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.55. Logan, Yocum, Weiler, and sophomore Pat Elliott(Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) each had one individual first and one individual second place finish. Logan won the 100 backstroke in 54.63 and was second in the 200 freestyle in 1:50.42. Yocum won the 100 butterfly in 54.40 and was second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:37.47. Weiler won the 50 freestyle in 22.14 and was second in the 100 backstroke in 56.76. Elliott won the 200 freestyle in 1:49.46 and placed second in the 500 freestyle in a Washington College season-best 4:56.07.

Sophomore Brent Hochstein (Towsend, Del./Salesianum School) turned in a second-place finish in the 400 individual medley in 4:20.65.

The Shoremen return to action December 5th and 6th at the Randolph-Macon Invitational.

 

Host St. Mary's College of Maryland won seven of 11 events en route to a 113-92 non-conference women's swimming win over visiting Washington College tonight. The Seahawks improved to 8-1 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 1-3 with the loss. 

The Shorewomen opened the meet strong, winning the first two events. FreshmanJoelle Williamson (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), freshman Tricia Liller(Alexandria, Va./Annandale), freshman Katie Gorman (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), and senior Alicia Howard (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) won the 200 medley relay in 1:56.32. Sophomore Ellen Maxwell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) then won the 1000 freestyle in a Shorewomen season-best 11:03.52 to become their sixth-fastest swimmer ever in the event. 

Later in the meet, freshman Jennifer Clune (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt)won the 100 freestyle in a WC season-best 55.87 and Williamson took the 100 backstroke in a WC season-best 1:01.35 to improve upon her own time as the Shorewomen's fourth-fastest swimmer ever in the event. Junior Julianna Fritzinger (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) added a second-place finish in the 400 individual medley in 5:00.03, while Liller was second in the 100 breaststroke in a WC season-best 1:11.21 to become the Shorewomen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in the event. 

The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against Bryn Mawr.

 

Junior Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) picked up two gold medals as St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swimming (3-6) dropped a 138-66 non-conference decision to Washington College (3-1) Friday night.

Burgess tallied a couple of Capital Athletic Conference best times in winning the 1,000 and 500 freestyle events. He captured the 1,000 free in 10:10.26 before touching the wall first in the 500 free in 4:54.79. Burgess also collected a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 56.10.

The foursome of junior Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), first-year Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep), senior captain Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and sophomore Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood) posted a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:42.68.

Junior Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) notched a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 48.89 before anchoring the second-place 200 freestyle relay. Joining Speer on the relay were Braker, Lilley, and Witkop.

Speer finished third in the 50 freestyle in 22.32 while sophomore Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) came in third in the 400 individual medley in 4:21.12. Lilley placed third in the 100 backstroke in 57.59 while Broder was third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.43.

Witkop paced the Seahawks in the 200 freestyle with a fourth-place finish in 1:52.15.

It's a quick turnaround for St. Mary's as the Seahawks will be back in the pool tomorrow afternoon, welcoming McDaniel College to The Aquatic Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center for a non-conference dual meet at 1:00 p.m.

 

St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swimming improved to 8-1 on the season with a 113-92 non-conference victory over Washington College (1-3) Friday night. Senior captain Brooke Raab (Parkton, Md./Hereford) collected three gold medals while senior Hannah Hafey (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) picked up a pair of first-place finishes.

Raab started the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 individual medley in 4:44.61 before capturing the 100 butterfly in 1:01.53. She finished out the meet with a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.20. Her times in the 400 IM and the 100 breaststroke are tops in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Raab was part of a 1-2 Seahawk punch in the 100 fly as senior captain Kelsey Abernathy (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) placed second in 1:04.10.

Hafey notched a gold medal in the 50 freestyle as she touched the wall first in 25.57 while first-year Elizabeth Straathof (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) came in second in 25.93. Hafey then was the lead-off swimmer on the winning 200 freestyle relay. Joining Hafey on the relay were junior Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana), Abernathy, and Straathof.

In the 200 freestyle, McIlmail led a 1-2 St. Mary's finish as she won the event in 2:00.35 while junior Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) came in second in 2:02.93. Kohles then tallied a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:28.73 followed by Machlin in second in 5:31.94.

The foursome of junior Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur), Kohles, Machlin, and Abernathy recorded a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:58.24. Kohles rounded out her meet with a second-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle in 11:08.44.

McIlmail led the Seahawks in the 100 freestyle with a second-place finish in 55.94 while Straathof took third in 56.88. Hafey came in second in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.48 while Straight was third in 1:06.09.

It's a quick turnaround for St. Mary's as the Seahawks will be back in the pool tomorrow afternoon, welcoming McDaniel College to The Aquatic Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center for a non-conference dual meet at 1:00 p.m.
