Frank Elm Invite Recaps - Day 1

Rutgers

At the conclusion of day one of the Frank Elm Invite, the Rutgers swimming and diving team sits in third place in the 13-team field. The Scarlet Knights currently hold a score of 329 following Friday night’s finals session at the RU Aquatic Center.

Northeastern is in first-place with a score of 506, followed by Navy with a mark of 434.

RU shined on the boards, with freshman Addison Walkowiak (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and sophomore Alyssa Black (Middletown, N.Y.) claiming the top two spots in the 3-meter dive. Walkowaik, the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week honoree, finished first in the event with a season-best score of 309.45, while Alyssa Black (Middletown, N.Y.) placed right behind with a 261.05 mark. 

In the 400 yard medley relay, the team of senior Greta Leberfinger (Chatham, N.J.) and juniors Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.), Morgan Pfaff (Red Lion, Pa.) and Sarah Coyne (Osceola, Fla.) finished third in the heat, posting a final time of 3:45.86, just over a second behind Northeastern’s first-place quartet.

Pfaff also added a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley, hitting the wall with a season-best time of 2:03.08.
 
Competition resumes tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. Finals action is set to start at 6 p.m.

 

New Hampshire

The University of New Hampshire swimming & diving team completed the first day of the three-day invitational Friday Nov. 21 at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center, hosted by Rutgers University.

Senior Katie Mann (Prince George, British Columbia) was the lone UNH swimmer to record a first place finish in day one action. She claimed the top time in the 200-yard IM completing the event in 2 minutes-even.

Classmate Nicole Zahka (Medway, Mass) was the only Wildcat to dive on the day, taking fifth in the three-meter dive. Zahka earned herself a score of 236.50, secuing one of two top-five finishes for the 'Cats on the opening day.

To start the invitational, UNH placed 14th in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.38. Sophomore Sarah Broderick (Haverhill, Mass.) and freshman Liza Baykova (Moscow, Russia) swam the first two legs of the race, while junior Bettina Caspersen (Lyngby, Denmark) held the third leg and senior Megan Suffel (Cornwall, Ontario) anchored the race for the 'Cats.

In the 200-yard IM along with Mann, Caspersen notched a 15th place finish, blazing through the water with a time of 2:08.56 seconds. Senior Oneida Cooper (Johannesburg, South Africa) and sophomore Emily Giambastini (Walnut Creek, Calif.) also completed the event tapping the panel at 2:09:03 (25th) and 2:12:05 seconds (38th) respectively.

Broderick and Baykova competed in the same heat during the 50-yard freestyle. Baykova finished with a time of 24.29 seconds (21st) and Broderick shortly after to garner the 22nd spot in 24.36 seconds.

UNH finished 14th in the 400-yard medley relay to conclude day one action. The quaret of senior Nicole Anderson (Dover, N.H.), Caspersen, Suffel and Giambastini engineered a time of 4:02.27.

Following the first day of the Rutgers Invitational, the Wildcats sit 9th out of 10 teams at the invitational.
