Saint Mary's Sweeps Frostburg State; Splits with West Virginia Institute of Technology

 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swimming picked up an 80-15 Capital Athletic Conference victory over host Frostburg State University but fell 77-18 to West Virginia University Institute of Technology in a double dual meet Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks (3-5, 2-1 CAC) notched a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay in 4:15.92 behind the efforts of junior Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), first-year Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep), senior captain Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and sophomore Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood).

Burgess claimed a second-place finish in the 800 freestyle in 9:07.32 while first-year Max Madden (Cape St. Clair, Md./Broadneck) took third in 9:23.36. Sophomore Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) tallied a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 2:03.74.

Junior Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) picked up a pair of second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (25.15) and the 100 freestyle (55.06).

The foursome of Walchuck, Witkop, Lilley, and Speer staked a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:50.81.

Witkop picked up a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:24.43 while junior Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) placed third in the 200 butterfly in 2:18.27.

Lilley tallied a third-place finish in the 200 backstroke in 2:24.84 while Walchuck was third in the 400 freestyle in 4:29.09. Broder led the Seahawks in the 200 breaststroke with a fourth-place finish in 2:41.37.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Friday, November 21st as the Seahawks welcome Washington College to The Aquatic Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center for a non-conference dual meet at 5:30 p.m.

 

Senior Hannah Hafey (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) led St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swimming to two wins at Saturday's double dual meet hosted by Frostburg State University. The Seahawks (7-1, 3-0 CAC) posted a 78-17 Capital Athletic Conference win over Frostburg State (2-6, 0-2 CAC) and a 76-16 win over West Virginia University Institute of Technology.

Hafey notched three gold medals for St. Mary's. She touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle in 28.51 while junior Katie Andersen (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) placed third in 31.09. Hafey's second first-place finish came in the 400 freestyle, winning the event in 4:52.48, while senior captain Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) followed in second in 4:59.05.

Hafey then was the lead-off swimmer on the winning 400 freestyle relay as the Seahawks won the event in 3:27.35. Joining Hafey on the relay were junior Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson), and first-years Rachel Sonnenberg (Derwood, Md./Magruder) and Elizabeth Straathof (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson).

The foursome of junior Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur), Andersen, Sonnenberg, and senior captain Kelsey Abernathy (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) notched a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay in 5:00.14.

Senior captain Brooke Raab (Parkton, Md./Hereford) captured the 800 freestyle in 9:52.76 while Machlin came in second in 10:06.72. Raab added a second gold in the 200 individual medley, touching the wall first in 2:35.25, while Abernathy was second in 2:43.52.

Machlin picked up a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:37.23 while Sonnenberg placed second in 2:44.89. Straight also tallied a first-place finish for St. Mary's as she won the 200 backstroke in 2:36.16 while Raab was third in 2:40.98.

Straathof placed second in the 200 freestyle to lead the Seahawks with a time of 2:17.97 while Kohles finished third in 2:19.78. Straathof notched another second-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 1:03.75 while Abernathy came in third in 1:06.00. Kohles tallied a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:58.48.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Friday, November 21st as the Seahawks welcome Washington College to The Aquatic Center at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center for a non-conference dual meet at 5:30 p.m.
