Wingate Sweeps Quad Plus Meet

Wingate University sophomore Sofia Petrenko (Arkhangelsk, Russia) broke the 400 Individual Medley school record held by NCAA national champion Maria Vlashchenko to highlight the Bulldogs' double feature victories in the Wingate Quad Plus meet at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center Saturday. Petrenko won the 100 Butterfly and the 400 IM Saturday, along with helping the 'Dogs take the 400 Freestyle Relay crown (complete meet results).

The Wingate women compiled 1016 points in the two-day, five-team event. The remainder of the women's team leader board includes Catawba (552 points), Limestone (446), Gardner-Webb (418) and Lenoir-Rhyne (268). The Bulldog men posted 941 points. The rest of the men's team leader board includes Limestone (483 points), Catawba (481), Gardner-Webb (362) and Lenoir-Rhyne (358).

"The team overall performed really well, especially with the quick turn-around from last night," Wingate head men's and women's swimming coach Kirk Sanocki says. "We are progressing as anticipated. The season thus far has been one of our most consistent starts to the season. Sofia broke Maria's 400 IM record to the delight of the other swimmers."

In her final individual event of the weekend, Petrenko posted a 4:27.67 time in the 400 Individual Medley. Vlashchenko's previous record time (4:28.49) was established on March 12, 2008. Two days later, Vlashchenko won the NCAA Division II national championship in the 100 Breaststroke at the Mizzou Aquatic Center (Columbia, Mo.).

Earlier in the day, Petrenko won the 100 Butterfly with a time of 56.56 as the Bulldogs finished 1-2-3-4 in the event. In the 400 Freestyle Relay, Petrenko swam the first leg as Wingate recorded a time of 3:34.58. She was accompanied by junior Armony Dumur (Amiens, France), freshman Leigh-Ann Clark (Newport News, Va.) and junior Ana Fish (Carthage, N.C.) as the Bulldogs won by (almost) seven seconds.

Fish was a double relay victor, as she swam the anchor leg for Wingate's 200 Medley Relay quartet (1:47.96). Fish was joined by junior Rita Koryukova (Omsk, Russia), redshirt sophomore Olga Kosheleva (Yekaterinburg, Russia) and senior Jasmine Arzadon (Lorton, Va.).

Sophomores Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia) and Jessika Weiss (Macon, Ga.) collected individual gold medals Saturday. Arkhipova won the 100 Backstroke (57.96), while Weiss took the checkered flag in the 200 Breaststroke (2:23.77). Wingate's depth was huge, as the Bulldogs were 2-3-4 in the 50 Freestyle. Clark, Fish and Dumur finished within 26/100 seconds of each other in the sprint event.

Wingate men's recap

Wingate junior Ossian Arvidsson (Kungälv, Sweden) won the 1000 Freestyle (9:50.36) and finished second in the 400 Individual Medley (4:13.53). Bulldog sophomore Øystein Fjeldberg (Oslo, Norway) won the 400 IM with a time of 4:09.75.

WU junior Roman Kanyuka (Moscow, Russia) matched Weiss by winning both Wingate Quad Plus meet breaststroke events. On Saturday, Kanyuka touched first in the 200 Breaststroke (2:05.41). Classmate Damjan Petrovski (Skopje, Macedonia) was second with a time of 2:06.14.

Freshman Jerome Heidrich (Hamburg, Germany) won one individual event and played a role in Wingate's triumphant 400 Freestyle Relay team Saturday. In the 100 Butterfly, Heidrich finished first with a time of 52.07. In the aforementioned relay, Heidrich swam leg number two as the Bulldogs recorded a time of 3:06.96. Sophomores Leif-Henning Klüver (Risum-Lindholm, Germany) and Lucas Cuadros (Cali, Colombia) and senior Issam Zeraidi (Brussels, Belgium) completed Wingate's victorious 400 Free Relay group.

Both Bulldog teams will return to action Nov. 21-23, as Wingate hosts the annual Fall Frenzy Invitational at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in downtown Charlotte. Following the Thanksgiving holidays, both Wingate teams will travel to Savannah, Ga. Thursday, Dec. 4 through Saturday, Dec. 6 for the SCAD-Savannah Invitational. The yearly event is held at the Chatham County Aquatics Center.

 

Catawba's women finished second, while the men placed third at the Quad Swim Meet which finished up Saturday afternoon at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. Wingate won both the men's and women's events. Limestone was second in the men's meet and third in the women's. Gardner-Webb finished fourth and Lenoir-Rhyne fifth in both men's and women's action.

Catawba posted wins in the three events on Saturday. Dominik Brus (Krakow, POLAND/Loms Krakow) picked up his second win of the meet as he claimed first in the 100 back (51.97). Toomas Goutt (Saint Witz, FRANCE/de Vinci) also got a win for the men in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.42. In women's action, Nadine Brockmann (Hamburg, GERMANY/Ossietzsky) finished first in the 200 free in a time of 1:55.71.

The time Brockmann posted in the 200 free equaled the 10th best time in school history. Amy Cujas (Mocksville, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) equaled the fifth fastest 50 free swim as she placed fifth with a time of 24.95. Another top 10 all-time swim was posted by Anna Barnes (Suwanee, Ga./N. Gwinett HS/Darton St.), who was second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:55.65.

Andrew McCollister (Rockwell, N.C./Salisbury HS) posted a third-pace finish in the men's 1000 free (10:01.08) and the 400 IM (4:14.85), while Jevgenij Gamper (Vilnius, LITHUANIA/Kachialov) finished fourth in the 200 breast (2:09.51) and fourth in the 50 free (21.73). Goutt was fifth in the 50 free (21.99) and Finn Furstenwerth (Hamburg, GERMANY/Gymnasium Farmsen) fourth in the 400 IM (4:21.67).

Next up for the swim teams will be the Wingate Invite which will be held Nov. 21-23 also at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.
