Penn State Men Lead Virginia, Trail Michigan; Women Trail Both

Two Nittany Lions broke McCoy Natatorium records, helping the Penn State men’s swimming and diving team to a second place after the first day of dual meet competition against Michigan and Virginia on Friday. The Nittany Lions have a 99-66 advantage over the Cavaliers, but trail the Wolverines, 105-62.
 
Nate Savoy (Reading, Pa.) set the pool record with his first-place 200 back showing. His 1:46.08 time was .03 second faster than the previous record, set by former Nittany Lion Josh Weaver in 1999.
 
In the 100 free, Shane Ryan (Havertown, Pa.) secured a first-place record-setting performance after clocking in at 43.83, more than half of a second faster than John Hauser's 44.39 mark set in 2013.
 
Savoy and Ryan also helped Penn State's relay teams to second-place finishes. In the 200 free relay, the team of Ryan, Savoy, Jeff Young (Hershey, Pa.) and Matt Grillo (Montreal, Quebec) swam to a 1:20.59 time. The 400 medley relay team of Savoy, Ryan, Andrew Schuehler (Camden, N.J.) and Young touched the wall in 3:16.39.
 
Picking up bronze during the meet was Bob Bantley (Maple Glen, Pa.) in the 100 free (45.38), Savoy in the 200 IM (1:50.32) and Schuehler in the 100 breast (55.97).
 
The Nittany Lions continue dual meet action against Virginia and Michigan tomorrow at 11 a.m. in McCoy Natatorium.

 

On the first day of dual meet competition Friday, the Penn State women’s swimming and diving team trails Michigan, 93-74, and Virginia, 94-73.
 
The Nittany Lions earned 10 top-three finishes on the evening, including an individual victory by junior Katie Rowe (Glenville, N.Y.) and a pool record swim by the 200-yard freestyle relay team.
 
Rowe picked up Penn State’s only individual victory on the evening in the 200-yard butterfly. The Nittany Lions swept the event, taking each of the top three spots and Rowe got a hand to the wall in 2:00.27, a team-best this season. Sophomore Katelyn Sowinksi (Severna Park, Md.) (2:00.47) and junior Kaitlin Jones (Midlothian, Va.) (2:00.73) followed just behind Rowe.
 
The Nittany Lions started off the night strong as the team of sophomore Katie Saloky (Bloomsburg, Pa.), junior Alyson Ackman (Montreal, Quebec), Jones and senior Carolyn Fittin (Sea Girt, N.J.) topped the field in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.02, a season-best for the team and a McCoy Natatorium record.
 
Senior Megan Siverling (Chester Springs, Pa.) clocked the squad’s best time of the year in the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 4:49.17, good for second place. Ackman matched Siverling’s second-place performance in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 50.11 for another Penn State best on the year.
 
Dual action against the Wolverines and the Cavaliers continues tomorrow, with events beginning at 11 a.m. at McCoy Natatorium.

 

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving picked up six event wins against Penn State and Michigan on the first day of a two-day meet Friday evening at McCoy Natatorium.
 
After day one, the Cavalier women lead Michigan, 99-68, and Penn State, 94-73. The UVa men are trailing Penn State, 99-66, and Michigan, 118-47.
 
On the women’s side, the Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in the 200 IM with sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) winning in a time of 2:00.72, ahead of senior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) in 2:01.10) and sophomore Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) in 2:01.51.
 
Bartholomew also captured the 200 back in 1:54.88, the fourth-fastest time in the country so far. Jones also placed third in the 200 fly in 2:00.73.
 
Sophomore Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) touched first in the 500 free in 4:45.65, the second-fastest time in the country, while fellow sophomore Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) won the 100 breast in 1:02.52.
 
In 1-meter diving, junior Katie Warburg (Wilton, Conn.) placed second with a score of 291.60, while freshman Corey Johnson (Ambler, Pa.) was third with 271.95 points.
 
On the men’s side, junior Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) won the 100 breast in 54.66. Sophomore Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) placed third in both the 500 free (4:29.41) and 200 back (1:48.43). Sophomore John Denning (Chesapeake, Va.) touched third in the 200 fly in 1:50.22.
 
On the 1-meter diving boards, senior JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won with a score of 336.90, while junior Carl Buergler (Arlington, Va.) was just behind in second with 335.00 points.
 
The action between the three schools continues Saturday (Nov. 8) at 11 a.m.
