Duke Sweeps William & Mary

Sophomore Bradley Cline turned in first-place finishes in three individual events and junior David Armstrong and freshmen Verity Abel and Leah Goldman won two events each as the Blue Devil men and women both defeated William & Mary in non-conference action Friday evening at the Tribe’s Recreation Center.

The Duke women cruised to a 156-106 victory over William & Mary to improve to 3-1 on the season while the men won by a score of 143-119 to move their ledger to 2-2. The dual meet featured a sprint format, with Blue Devil swimmers claiming 20 of the 28 events on the day.

Cline came away with wins in the 100 (46.71) and 200 (1:41.58) yard freestyle and also collected a first-place finish in the 100 IM (51.69). Armstrong led the field in the 50 (22.57) and 100 (50.21) butterfly and also competed on the Blue Devils’ winning 200 medley relay. Sophomores Kaz Takabayashi and Peter Kropp and senior Stefan Knight joined Armstrong on that winning relay, which clocked a time of 1:30.35 to out-touch the Tribe.

Abel and Goldman were double-winners as well for Duke, with Abel tapping the wall first in the 200 (1:53.25) and 500 (5:02.63) freestyle and Goldman recording victories in the 100 backstroke (57.12) and the 100 IM (57.60). She was also the Blue Devils’ top finisher in the 50 breaststroke, taking second overall, and anchored the 200 medley relay that came in second.

Junior Chelsea Ye, sophomore Jessie Sutherland, freshman Maria Sheridan and sophomore Maddie Rusch closed the meet with a first-place performance in the 200 freestyle relay, registering a season-best mark of 1:34.96.

The Duke divers will join the program’s swimmers Saturday, Nov. 8 in Norfolk, Va., as the teams face Old Dominion and St. Andrews University in a double dual meet at the Monarchs’ Swimming and Diving Facility. That meet is slated for an 11 a.m. start.
