Bentley Splits with Le Moyne

Senior Nadine Edwards (Danbury, Conn./Danbury HS) won three events and also participated on the Falcons’ winning 200 yard free relay as Bentley University posted a 168-130 victory over Le Moyne College in women’s college swimming action Sunday afternoon at the Dana Center.

Edwards posted victories in the meet’s longest race, the 1000 freestyle (11:21.24), and the shortest, the 50 free (26.26), as well as the 500 free (5:30.93). The closest was the 50 where she edged classmate Danielle Hellstern (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS)  by six-hundredths of a second. Bentley went 1-2-3 in that event with freshman Jessica Chen (Darien, Conn./Darien HS) third in 26.76.

Edwards, Hellstern and Chen also combined with sophomore Kaitlin McGahie (Boylston/ Tahanto Reg. HS) to close out the meet with a winning time of 1:43.75 in the 200 free relay. Hellstern was also second in the 200 free, finishing in 2:03.19, and McGahie was first to the wall in the 100 free (55.83), as well as second in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.36).

Senior Paige Wilde (Naugatuck, Conn./Holy Cross HS) was a double-winner for the Falcons, sweeping the two one-meter diving events with scores of 176.93 and 258.44. Her combined tally of 435.37 met the standard for the NCAA Division II Pre-Qualification Meet in March.

Bentley’s other victory came in the 200 butterfly with freshman Anne Warren (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron HS) finishing in 2:18.27.

Sophomore Lindsey Goodwin (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) and freshman Emily Niemiec (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney HS) each had two second-place finishes. Goodwin was second in the two backstroke events with times of 1:07.06 in the 100 and 2:21.21 in the 200. Niemiec’s seconds came in the 200 individual medley (2:17.43) and the 200 breaststroke (238.20).

Bentley, 1-1, will swim at Roger Williams University Friday night.

Bentley University junior Sebastian Bury (Bellevue, Wash./Newport Senior HS) touched the wall first three times, but in the end, Le Moyne College prevailed, edging the Falcons 150-148 in men’s college swimming action Sunday afternoon at the Dana Center.

The meet was even at 131 with two events left, but the visiting Dolphins picked up 15 of 19 points in the 200 yard individual medley to clinch a tie. Tim Buff and Ben Verdi went 1-2 in the event for Le Moyne with times of 2:02.03 and 2:06.94, respectively.

Bentley answered by taking 13 of 17 points in the closing 200 free relay, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Falcons. Winning that event for the home team were Bury, freshman Chris Vukas (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) and sophomores Liam Bartlett (Syracuse, N.Y./William Nottingham HS) and Davis Wilson (Ransom Canyon, Texas/Lubbock HS), with a time of 1:29.85.

Bury, in addition to the relay win, had the best time in both the 50 free (22.56) and the 100 free (49.72), and also helped Bentley to a second in the 200 medley relay (1:40.37). The Falcons went 1-2-3 in the 50 with senior Rene Faria (Caracas, Venezuela) and Bartlett following Bury.

Bentley’s other winning performances were posted by Wilson in the 200 free (1:50.43) and Vukas in the 100 backstroke (55.80).

Junior Colton Bridge (Tolland, Conn./Tolland HS) was second in both the one- and three-meter diving events, and senior Josh Witty (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos HS) also had two seconds with times of 56.03 in the 100 back and 2:03.23 in the 200 back.
