Florida State's Wilson Honored With ACC Sportsmanship Award

The Atlantic Coast Conference and Commissioner John Swofford recognized three ACC Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2013-14 academic year on Monday.  Among the trio was former Florida State swimmer Hannah Wilson.

The ACC Sportsmanship Award winners were selected from institutional nominees submitted by each school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and their advisors. To be considered, nominees must consistently demonstrate good sportsmanship and ethical behavior in his/her participation in intercollegiate athletics as well as in the community, and be in good academic standing.

The Tupelo, Miss., native was the lone individual recognized for trading her swim cap with Pittsburgh’s Lauren Matevish following a meeting involving the two schools over their training trips in December. The gesture was her way of welcoming the Panthers to the ACC.

“Being a Florida State Seminole has taught me that when I wear Garnet and Gold, I’m representing more than just myself,” Wilson said. “I am honored to receive this award because it reflects positively on the university and our team that has shaped and helped me grow as both an athlete and a person.”

Wilson was recognized along with the Notre Dame Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Duke baseball team.

“Sportsmanship is very healthy for competition,” FSU head coach Frank Bradley said. “We got together with Pitt during our training trip and it made well for great friendly racing.  Hannah was a model student-athlete and exuded leadership and sportsmanship every day. I am happy for her and I wish her nothing but the best as she takes the next step in her career.”

Wilson graduated in May earning her Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in public relations and will serve as the ACC Championships intern for the 2014-15 season.
