Johns Hopkins Sweeps Mary Washington

The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's swim team beat host Mary Washington, 162-41, in the Blue Jays' final dual meet of the season. Hopkins finishes the dual meet portion of its season with a 6-2 record, while the Eagles fall to 6-3.

Hopkins opened the meet by taking the top two spots in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of juniors Melinda Yau and Maggie Storm and freshmen Sarah Westley and Kailyn Koh won the event with a time of 1:49.83. Sophomore Sean McGrath, freshman Helena Arose, senior Taylor Kitayama and junior Ana Bogdanovski took second place in 1:51.08. The Blue Jays then took first and third place in the 3x300 Free Relay. Sophomore Ellen Marcus and freshmen Kristen Kaiser and Emily Lubin won the relay with a time of 9:23.81. Finishing in third place were freshman Lindsay Kriz, junior Selena Guerrero-Martin and senior Katie Rownd in a time of 9:37.25. 
 
Yau and junior Kylie Holden followed with a one-two finish in the 100 Back. Yau won the event as she touched in 59.15, while Holden clocked in at 1:03.27. Storm then won the 100 Breast in 1:09.12 while Koh took third place in 1:13.35. The 150 Fly saw the Blue Jays sweep the top three spots, led by freshman Shirley Chan with a winning time of 1:32.62. Freshman Abby Brown followed closely in second place in 1:33.32, while classmate Keri Gawlik finished in 1:37.15 for third.

Hopkins turned the same trick in the next five events. In the 200 Free Relay, sophomore Hannah Benn, junior Jill Liwacz and seniors Kylie Ternes and Sarah Rinsma took the win in 1:39.14. Sophomore Megan Auzenbergs, Marcus, Bogdanovski and McGrath combined for second place with a time of 1:40.61. And coming in third place were Kitayama, Kriz, Lubin and Chan with a time of 1:42.36. Kitayama led the field in the 100 Free with a winning time of 52.72. Koh clocked in at 54.90 to just beat out Westley by seven-hundredths of second for second place.

In the 150 Back, McGrath beat the field by more than three seconds to win in 1:35.91. Benn followed in second with a time of 1:39.13 and Gawlik took third in 1:41.04. Strom was the winner in the 150 Breast as she touched in 1:49.76. Junior Sammi Fox finished in 1:50.67 for second place and Arose placed third in 1:52.57. The Blue Jays then paired with their male counterparts for the Mixed 600 Free Relay. Rinsma, senior Anthony Lordi, Rownd and senior Will Kimball won in 5:24.19. Sophomore Michael McGoldrick, Marcus, sophomore Billy Gravley and McGrath followed in second place in 5:35.63. And taking third place were Brown, freshman Austin Bridges, Koh and freshman Patrick Flynn with a time of 5:41.93.

Ternes followed with a win in the 100 Fly, clocking in at 58.19 to beat Mary Washington's Hannah Hagy by more than four seconds. Bogdanovski then led a contingent of Blue Jays that swept the top three spots in the 100 IM. She touched in 1:01.39 to win, followed closely by Fox in 1:01.80 and Holden in 1:02.24. The teams closed out the meet with the Mixed 400 Medley Relay. Senior Joe Acquaviva, freshman Evan Holder, Westley and Auzenbergs won the relay with a time of 3:47.12. Gravley, freshman Pilar Shimizu, senior David Woodford and Ternes then took second place with in 3:47.85.

Hopkins returns to action at the Virginia Tech Invitational, February 8-9, in Blacksburg, VA.



The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's swim team won all 13 events en route to a 154-49 win over host Mary Washington in the Blue Jays' final dual meet of the season. Hopkins finishes with a 7-1 record in dual meets, while Mary Washington slips to 6-3.

Hopkins kicked things off by taking first and second in the 200 Medley Relay. Senior Joe Acquaviva, freshman Evan Holder, junior Greg Kogut and senior Will Kimball took the win with a time of 1:35.29. Following in second place were freshmen Patrick Flynn and Bryan Pon, senior David Woodford and junior Aaron Katrikh in 1:38.76. The Blue Jays turned the same trick in the 3x300 Free Relay. Freshman Josh Hughes, senior Anthony Lordi and freshman Kyle Verdeyen grabbed the win with a time of 8:13.40. The team of freshman Andrew Greenhalgh and sophomores Michael McGoldrick and Billy Gravley followed just 0.45 seconds later for second place.

Holder then won the 100 Back as he touched in 52.99, while McGoldrick placed fifth in 59.11. Hughes followed with a win in the 100 Breast, clocking in at 1:01.77. Freshman Connor Johnson claimed third place with a time of 1:03.67 and Katrikh placed fourth in 1:04.11. Freshman Muhammad Hudhud won the 150 Fly as he touched in 1:25.90, while Greenhalgh placed second with a time of 1:27.97. The 200 Free Relay saw Lordi, Kimball, Acquaviva and freshman Jeremy Bauchwitz grab the win in 1:24.95. Freshman Mitchell Boyer, Pon, Bridges and Kogut took third place as they combined for a time of 1:29.72. 
 
Bauchwitz led a contingent of Blue Jays that claimed first through third in the 100 Free, touching the wall first in 48.95. Katrikh finished in 49.36 for second and Verdeyen followed in 49.80 for third place. In the 150 Back, Flynn beat out Woodford for first place as he finished in 1:24.33. Woodford touched in 1:24.61 for second place. Hudhud picked up his second win of the night win he touched in 1:39.08 in the 150 Breast. Greenhalgh placed third in 1:43.87, just beating Kogut by six-hundredths of a second.

The Blue Jays then paired with their female counterparts for the Mixed 600 Free Relay. Senior Sarah Rinsma, Lordi, senior Katie Rownd and Kimball won in 5:24.19. McGoldrick, sophomore Ellen Marcus, Gravley and sophomore Sean McGrath followed in second place in 5:35.63. And taking third place were freshman Abby Brown, freshmen Austin Bridges, Kailyn Koh and Flynn with a time of 5:41.93. Acquaviva and Holden then tied for the win in the 100 Fly as they each clocked in 52.72.

In the final individual event, Lordi led a sweep by the Blue Jays of the top three spots in the 100 IM. He clocked in at 53.78 to grab the win, followed by Bridges (54.87) and Johnson (56.28). The teams closed out the meet with the Mixed 400 Medley Relay. Acquaviva, Holder, freshman Sarah Westley and sophomore Megan Auzenbergs won the relay with a time of 3:47.12. Gravley, freshman Pilar Shimizu, Woodford and senior Kylie Ternes then took second place with in 3:47.85.
