UConn Stops Seton Hall

The University of Connecticut women’s swimming and diving team improved to 3-1 on the season Sunday, defeating Seton Hall 174.5-116.5.

The Huskies started out strong against the Pirates, winning the 200-yard medley relay in the first event of the day, as the team of freshmen Christine Pedersen, Jordan Drake and Tara O’Prey and junior Chinyere Pigot finished the event in 1:48.44 to capture first place honors.

O’Prey continued to swim well throughout the meet, winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.87. She won her third race of the day in the 100-yard butterfly, as she took home first place after finishing in 58.71.

Pedersen, who has performed well all season for the Huskies, was also a multiple-winner Sunday along with Pigot. Pedersen finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.14 and Pigot won the 100-yard freestyle after she completed the race in 53.50.

Other notable results from Sunday came from freshman Sophie Nothnagle, who won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.36, and junior Tessa Pena, who was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle, beating everyone with a time of 5:10.23.

UConn also swam against Princeton this week, participating in a non-scoring scrimmage against the Tigers on Saturday.

“We are very pleased that we were able to get back to competition this weekend,” UConn swimming coach Bob Goldberg said. “It was a very good win against Seton Hall and we are looking forward to senior weekend next week against Colgate and Dartmouth.”

On the diving side, sophomore Taryn Urbanus paced the Huskies in the 3-meter event, winning it after she scored a 267.38. Freshman Alexandra Butera finished second in the 3-meter, scoring 244.72 points, and in the 1-meter even Urbanus (284.40) and Butera (264.97) earned third and fourth place respectively.

UConn swims Dartmouth this Saturday and faces Colgate the following day. Both meets start at 12 p.m. and will take place at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium in Storrs.

 UConn Swimming and Diving Tops Seton Hall, 175-116

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The University of Connecticut men’s swimming and diving team remained perfect on the season Sunday, as it downed Seton Hall 175-116 to improve to 4-0 in head-to-head competitions on the year.

In their first event of the meet, the 200-yard medley relay team of juniors Lachezar Shumkov and Felix Samuels, sophomore Jeff Magin and senior Asher Garcia finished first with a time of 1:35.13. The UConn team of senior Keith Piper, sophomore Wyatt Boliek and freshmen Chris Girg and James Donlevy finished less than two seconds later to take third place honors in the event.

Samuels’s strong day would continue, as the London, England native finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.41 and he would later win the 100-yard freestyle after completing it in 47.72. Shumkov, Girg and Magin were also multiple winners Sunday, as Shumkov won the 100-yard breaststroke (58.65) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.92), while Girg finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.29) and in the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.83).

Magin earned first place honors in the 100-yard backstroke (51.98) and the 200-yard backstroke, as he finished the race in a time of 1:52.96.

Three other Huskies won races Sunday, with senior Ben Yacano winning the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 52.59, while freshman Jerry Burton finished first in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:06.07). In the 200-yard freestyle, senior Sean Battle took home first place honors, swimming it in 1:45.40 to edge out Seton Hall’s Timothy Bosse, who finished in a time of 1:45.74.

In the diving portion of the meet, sophomore John Brice finished second in the 1-meter after scoring 300.75. Senior Anthony Cortright was just behind Brice, earning third place with a score of 292.05. Brice was third (312.07) in the 3-meter and Cortright was fourth, scoring a 291.30.

UConn competes against Dartmouth this Saturday and faces Colgate the following day. Both meets start at 12 p.m. and will take place at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium in Storrs.
