Ball State Men Finish Third at Butler Invite

Seniors Jake Brehmer and Drew Tharp led the way for the Ball State men’s swimming and diving team Sunday as the Cardinals finished third at the Butler Invitational. Brehmer and Tharp each claimed two individual wins while eight season-best times were set.

University of Wisconsin – Green Bay finished first with a score of 766.5 followed by Xavier University with 673 points. Ball State earned 539.5 points while Evansville rounded out the scores with 444 points.

Brehmer, who was coming off a NCAA Zone qualifying score Saturday at Eastern Michigan, earned first place in the 1-meter with a score of 283.15 as well as in the 3-meter with a 282.25. Tharp excelled in his specialty – the butterfly. The two-time MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honoree turned in a 51.31 in the 100 fly and a season-best 1:53.84 in the 200 fly.

Tanner Barton finished third in the 100 and 200 fly with times of 52.45 and 1:57.43. Austin Green earned fourth in the 100 free with a time of 48.25. Also posting top-five finishes for the Cardinals was Michael Oaks who tied for fifth with Cole Smith in the 100 free with times of 48.60. Oaks also earned fifth in the 200 free with a 1:46.10. Logan Kisinger clocked a 54.84 in the 100 back for fifth place. Tucker Hale earned a season-best time of 2:01.29 in the 200 back to finish fifth.

The 400 free relay of Austin Green, Neal Fennig, Michael Oaks and Cole Smith finished third with a time of 3:11.29.

Cardinals who posted season-best times included: Austin Green with a 1:47.40 in the 200 free, Cameron Watters with a 57.06 in the 100 back, Bradley Ridge with a 53.79 in the 100 fly and Conner Snare with a 1:03.92 in the 100 breast and a 4:23.73 in the 400 IM.

Ball State is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 1 when it hosts Buffalo at Lewellen Aquatic Center. The meet is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start and admission is free.
