The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s swimming teams combined to win 20 of 22 events at their final dual meets of the season against Rhodes College and Sewanee: The University of the South Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.
The Washington University men won all 11 events contested, while the WUSTL women had nine event winners. Team scores from the meet were not available.
Junior Luke Dobben, senior Tyler Perez and sophomore RJ Petrella won two individual events each to lead the Washington U. men. Dobben finished first in the 1000 freestyle (9:49.60) to lead a first- through third-place sweep, and added a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:57.62) as the Bears took the top-four spots in the event. Dobben also led off the Bears’ winning 200-free relay, teaming with sophomore Kaisen Yao, senior Jason Wan and freshman Michael Lagieski to win in 1:27.59.
Perez won the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.15, and also finished first in the 200 free (1:48.89). Junior Matt Nutter (1:49.14) and Lagieski (1:50.21) placed second and third in the 200 free. Petrella won the 400 individual medley in 4:16.96, and also placed first in the 200 backstroke in 1:59.65.
Freshman MariMac Collins was a double winner for the Washington U. women, taking first in the 50 free in 25.07 and in the 500 free in 5:17.63. Sophomore Kristalyn McAfee won the 200 backstroke in 2:12.79, while finishing second to Collins in the 50 free (25.21). McAfee also anchored Washington U.’s winning 400-medley relay, joining sophomores Katie Anderson and Sophie Gan and freshman Lauren Carlos to win in 4:03.75. Gan added an individual first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.34).
Nutter led a top-three sweep by the Washington U. men in the 100 free, winning with a time of 48.94. He also joined freshman Justin Morrell, Lagieski and sophomore Reed Dalton to win the 400-medley relay in 3:34.51. Morrell added a first-place finish in the 50 free in 22.06. Freshman Andrew Ellison was the final event winner for the WUSTL men, placing first in the 500 free in 4:46.83 to lead a top-four sweep by the Bears.
Sophomore Amanda Stadermann won the 200 butterfly for the WUSTL women in 2:09.59, and senior Chi Pham won the 400 IM in 4:36.94. Stadermann, junior Katie Crist, freshman Claire Savage and Carlos teamed up to win the 200-free relay in 1:42.35. The final individual winner for the Washington U. women was freshman Erin Polries in the 200 free (1:59.38).
The Washington University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams return to action at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships hosted by Emory University Feb. 12-15 in Atlanta.
