The Indiana women’s swimming and diving team picked up a dual meet victory over in-state rival Purdue, topping the Boilermakers 154.5-135.5 Saturday afternoon at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Indiana opened with a win in the 200 medley relay as Brooklynn Snodgrass, Bronwyn Pasloski, Gia Dalesandro and Kait Flederbach went 1:40.76.
Haley Lips won the 1,650 free in 16:53.87, with Dorina Szekeres second in 16:56.06. It was the first competitive 1,650 free swim for the junior. Lindsay Vrooman took the 200 free title in 1:48.41, with Cynthia Pammett third (1:50.53).
It was a 1-2-3 Hoosier finish in the 100 backstroke with Snodgrass leading the trio at 53.97. Allie Day was second (54.85) and Justine Ress third (55.64).
Pasloski continued the Hoosier win streak with a time of 1:02.12 in the 100 breaststroke. Claudia DiCapua took sixth in 1:07.18. Dalesandro won the 200 butterfly (1:59.59), with Olivia Barker was second (2:00.16) and Brenna MacLean fourth (2:04.40). Flederbach touched the wall second in the 50 free (23.34), with Pammett third (23.72).
It was a 1-2-3-4 finish for IU in the 200 backstroke, with Snodgrass taking first in 1:56.11. Day was second (2:00.83), followed by Ress (2:01.18) and Shelby Carroll (2:01.45).
Pasloski out-touched Purdue’s Francesca Marr to win the 200 breaststroke, 2:15.70 to 2:15.79. Szekeres was fifth in 2:23.49. In the diving well, Kate Hillman was second on the platform (287.33) and third on the 1-meter (275.93).
Dalesandro made it a sweep of the butterfly races, winning the 100 fly in 54.44. Barker followed in fifth place at 57.05. Vrooman won the 500 freestyle in 4:51.15, while Lips took fourth (4:57.06).
The meet was capped off with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay with Pammett, Flederbach, Vrooman and Snodgrass winning in 3:24.20.
The women are back in action next Friday as they play host, along with the men, to the Louisville Cardinals. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. ET at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
No. 18 Purdue women’s swimming and diving swept the freestyle sprints and the diving events, but those turned out to be the Boilers’ only victories of the day in a 154.5.-135.5 dual meet loss at No. 11 Indiana Saturday afternoon.
Purdue suffered its first dual meet loss of the season, falling to 7-1. The Hoosiers improved to 7-3 in duals this year.
Carly Mercer swept the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints, improving her team-best total for individual victories this season to 16. She also swam on each of the Boilers’ top-finishing relay teams.
Michelle Cabassol won the 1-meter diving competition for her sixth win of the season. MacKenzie Tweardy bested IU’s Kate Hillman in platform diving after also finishing second to Cabassol from the 1-meter springboard.
Francesca Marr was Purdue’s top individual finisher in three events, placing second in both breaststroke races along with taking third in the 200 IM. She was out touched by less than a second by IU’s Bronwyn Pasloski in both breaststroke events. The Purdue junior managed to post a new team season-best time (1:02.97) in the 100 breast. The 200 breast was decided by just .09 hundredths of a second.
Allie Davis also finished as the runner-up in a pair of events, placing second in the 200 and 500 free. Meagan Lim was the Boilers’ top finisher in both butterfly events. Trish Regan recorded a personal season-best time (2:02.13) in the 200 backstroke, improving on her second-best time on the team in the event this year.
Purdue’s 200 medley relay team of Hannah Manger, Marr, Kylie Vogel and Mercer improved on its personal season-best time (1:42.92) as a foursome set in the dual meet win against Michigan two weeks ago.
The Boilermakers were without two of their top performers Saturday as Casey Matthews and Rhiannon Sheets did not compete. Purdue continues to focus its training towards the Big Ten Championships in February.
The Boilers’ six seniors will be recognized as part of the annual senior salute in conjunction with next weekend’s two-day Big Ten Triple Duals at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Purdue will welcome No. 13 Minnesota and Wisconsin to campus, with action begins Friday evening at 6 p.m.
